IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FRESH, LOCAL PRODUCE!!!

This is a post that I wrote a year ago as we settled in here in the hamptons for a wonderful summer. This summer has begun with the normal crowds but this year more than last is a beauty--the weather has been spectaular and after that long horrible winter, ....well you  guessed it! We are enjoying it more than ever!!!

LOCAL PRODUCE, HEALTHY EATING AND FUN...ALL FOUND IN THE HAMPTONS!!!

Farm stands are just one Iconic statement of the Hamptons...There are many but the Farm Stand is the stand-alone Icon that has been brought forward from the earliest times to now with very little if any change!

The Farm land and the Ocean, seemingly the most crucial elements of earth and water that seed, cultivateLocal produce is used for local consumption, propagate and create the primary foods for our table, are the big draw here.

When the masses head out this way for summer fun, they normally first seek out the nearest farm stand to gather the local fare for their dinner tables.

Very few people from the outside world fully understand the importance of the land here in the Hamptons; fertile and always producing the most enjoyable and healthy farm fare for the masses, this is the most arid soil on the planet. Fertile and rich in nutrients, the local farms have been tended by the early founding families. They have carefully rotated their crops over the last century and and a half just to keep the soil nutrient rich. These farm lands have escaped the giant farm operations that have over-taken the Midwest while ensuring the reward of the healthiest produce in return.

From potatoes to tomatoes, from berries to arugula and basil, from radishes to peaches, this is the place that is the little known "bread-basket" to Long Island and other parts of the East Coast.

Fresh farm-to-table fare is without question the healthiest way to eat; The Hamptons is the pinnacle of healthy eating.

The very famous Long Island Potato is grown here where the soil is so  rich and fertile from the sea.

Between the ocean and the sound there were at least two centuries or more that the delicious Long Island  potato was raised and sold across America....and the corn! No one can forget the deliciously sweet and incredibly tender ear-corn that comes from the farm fields here.

No one can ever  forget the Hamptons once they have tasted the tomatoes that grow here either! There is the enduring tomato, basil and mozzarella salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar that is a staple in the Hamptons...Meals are made of that salad, deliciously seasoned tiny "cull" potatoes that are steamed, seasoned and then offered up in white, red and purple....and that irresistible bi-colored corn! Yum!

All this and a great local Rose from the local vintner Wolffer Vineyard make the very best leisurely lunch in The Hamptons.

Raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and blackberries fill the farm stands near the Villages and Hamlets. Come June there are farm stands devoted strictly to the berries that are the sweetest and juiciest you will ever find, and you can even pick your own if you want!

Hanks Farm Stand, noted for it's fabulous "Pumpkin Time" spread in the fall has expanded his farm stand to the North of the Highway location near all the back roads that the traffic now takes to avoid the busy Route 27 and 39A. Located on North Sea Mecox Road, you will find the most beautiful zinnias and cosmos available by the bunch. Cornflowers fill the fields if left to propagate and nothing is more thrilling than to see a roadside covered in the recognizable blue in the early summer months. The tomatoes, zuccinis, cucumbers and peas are perfect here.

Then there are the fields of nodding sunflowers, almost acknowledging the flow of constant traffic along the highways and byways of the Hamptons.

The Halsey Farm, owned by one of the earliest founding families here has a spectacular farm stand on the corner of Deerfield Road and Head of Pond.

There are Bi-colored and tri--colored vegetables such as tomatoes in bright yellow, red and purple, and delicious carrots in white, traditional orange and purple. "Cull" Potatoes are offered in the standard white, red and a deep, (almost black) purple making the enjoyment even greater as the eye is pleased along with the tongue!

And while other farm stands focus on the standard yellow sweet corn, here at the Halsey Farm Stand  you will find the tenderest, most delicious bi-colored corn you will ever eat!

So, as the crowds grow here and while day-trippers search endlessly for a peek at the Kardashians, the local population and regular summer residents settle in for a summer filled with the healthiest, most delicious food on the planet---Farm fresh food from the rich and fertile soil of The Hamptons!

Thank you Debbie! It does look delicious doesn't it? I have a new interest in the farm to table business--I think the prepared food business is great right now and the healthier it is the better! That means local, fresh and colorful!

Lottie: Thank you...I am sure this summer will be one of the best! The   Hamptons is  not often thought of as vast farmland--and it was at one time vast! Today we see $20mil homes cropping up in those vast fields and there does not seem to be any thought of what they are built upon!
