June is National Homeownership Month and here's Reason #7 why you should own your own home:
YOU, NOT YOUR LANDLORD, DECIDE HOW TO DECORATE YOUR HOME
When you rent, your landlord has a lot to say about how you decorate your home... not you. So even though your home might be your "castle," when it's a rented property it's not a personalized "castle" by any means. There are very few rental/lease agreements (maybe, even none) which allow a renter to do anything to alter a home, even cosmetically, without the landlord's advance permission. And if a landlord does give permission, it's often only on the condition that you will restore the home to its original condition at your expense when you leave. (And without advance permission, you might actually be evicted!)
From the perspective of a landlord, it's not an unreasonable expectation that you change nothing, as changes you make can decrease the home's value or even increase a landlord's cost to put it back into original condition if zoning or code violations came into play.
Even if you are looking to make changes that actually improve the home's value, here's a question to answer if you're a renter ~ why would you spend your own money and invest your own "sweat equity" to make improvements to a property you don't own and from which you won't ultimately benefit? It's not likely that your landlord will reimburse you for any improvements to the property from which he/she will ultimately benefit.
So if you're looking for your "inner interior designer" persona to come out in your home, it definitely is much better to own your own home and not rent!
