Phoenix, Scottsdale metro area is beautiful and in the center of the state but is an inexpensive place to live. Nationally, "Phoenix's 93.6 composite score is dwarfed by cities such as New York, the nation's most expensive, with a 223.7 composite index, and by Honolulu, the nation's second-priciest venue, with a score of 190.4" as reported by the Arizona Republic and Laurie Merrill on June 19, 2015.

"In Arizona, it's cheaper to live in Phoenix than in Lake Havasu City, Yuma or Flagstaff", according to the report from the Council for Community and Economic Research in the cost of living in Arizona article in the Arizona Republic, "covering data cover the first quarter of 2015".

In other markets, "Phoenix also rates as a more-affordable metro area than San Diego, which had a 141.9 composite score; Seattle, with 133.1; Denver, 107.7, and Dallas, 97.1. But Phoenix is considerably pricier than McAllen, Texas, the least-expensive city in the country, with composite index of 77.2.

Across the country, prices are collected at a specified time for more than 90,000 items with standard specifications.

The council contrasts 60 items, ranging from monthly mortgage rates and gasoline prices to tennis balls and toothpaste."
