I am full of jealousy right now. My sister and her family just got back from Galveston Island. One of my favorite places. As many of you can tell I love the water. Lakes, rivers, water parks and beaches.
But Galveston is not just a beach it is so much more! Galveston is a barrier island and it is wonderful! It is only about 50 miles south east of Houston which would make it only about 4.5 hours from our area of Central Texas. I suggest giving yourselves more time there is always some cute little town cafe to stop at on the way. It is a quick and easy weekend get away!
What to do when you get there? Oh my friends let me tell you. You will want to see Moody Gardens, it is a combination of them park and gardens, discovery center, museum and even a rain forest. Plan to spend some time. This is not a place you would want to go in and out of. For more information check out their website: Moody Gardens
This guy was playing meet and greet at the door!
Galveston has a SCHLITTERBAHN! Yes a water park on an island. LOVE IT! Need a little more info? Check out their website: Schlitterbahn Galveston
The other thing you MUST do is walk the Strand. It is a wonderful place full of history. Many of the building survived the great hurricane of 1900 which pretty much wiped out Galveston at that time. Big hint you will want to visit the strand again at Christmas time.
Did I forget to mention Galveston has an OPERA house. Yes the 1894 Opera house which is still putting on shows today! It is so beautiful. Check out the schedule : The Grand Opera House
There are other museums and homes to visit to see it all and do it justice you are either going to have to stay a week or pop up on different weekends with a different destination in mind.
To learn more about Galveston they have a great website with even more suggestions than I have.
Don't fret my South Texas fans I will be doing a post shortly on my other favorite coastal getaways. Hint Corpus Christi/ Port Aransas/Mustang Island..Just a teaser.
As always be safe on your Texas travels.
