Deer of Monroe, NY

Let me introduce you to the deer family of Monroe, NY.  Actually, I can't do that because there are too many deer families in our area to get them all in one place.  What I can do is introduce you to the typical Monroe NY deer.

The deer that show up in my neighborhood are the white tailed deer, which are so called because they have, well, you can figure that part out.  The deer are herbivores, and while they may snack on an occasional field mouse or bird, primarily they eat trees, shrubs, acorns and the like.  Needless to say, they can do a lot of damage to flowering plants and shrubs if the greenery is not sprayed with deer repellent or kept safe behind fences. That's one of the reasons many homeowners are not fans of the deer population. Although on a positive note, I understand they eat poison ivy which makes me a fan.

At this time of year, there are a huge number of deer wandering around, but that doesn't mean they are easy to see. If you want to see one, you really have to look for them. And that's because the white tailed deer have a great ability to be extremely quiet and not move a muscle.

This morning, I was walking my dog Halo, and I didn't even see this deer until we were about 10 feet away. She just stood totally still and watched us come, watched us walk past, watched me take a few pictures, and watched us leave. In that entire minute or two, she didn't twitch an ear or make any sound at all.

But as soon as we were a safe distance away, she decided she had enough and she crossed the road in search for a safer location.

White tailed deer are prevalent in the Monroe NY area. If you visit our area, keep an eye peeled if you want to take a few pictures, but even more importantly if you want to make sure they don't impact with your vehicle.

Come meet the deer of Monroe, NY.

The area around where I grew up in Michigan is filled with deer. My brother just had his van wrecked when he hit one at night last year. I remember deer grazing in the fields in the early mornings when I was out running growing up.

Richie - Awww, such a dear man.

Will - We do get an occasional car-deer mishap, but for the amount of deer in the area, it's not frequent.

Nicole - I hope your brother escaped without injury.  There is a prison up north a bit that is actually quite pretty from a distance - stone buildings, rolling green hills - and one of the meadows is always covered with deer in the evenings during certain times of year.  Very pretty.

The deer have less fear of people today . . . . and will come into a community. Or walk into a town or a stopping center far more often than they use to.

Good luck and success.

Hi Kat.  It certainly appears that they have no fear of humans.  I hope that the drivers are careful in your area.

Kat,

First of all, I'm a deer lover! When I lived in Northern, IL before TX White Tail Deer dominated the Forest Preserves, streets, and roads. They are so beautiful to watch but as you know and this post warns, they can also be deadly (deer and/or human) if hit by a car.

You captured such beautiful photographs! You truly know your area and can be of significant benefit to anyone relocating who doesn't know the area as well as you. This is a great post Kat!

Lou - That's true; they really do have minimum fear of people. We're co-existing.

Gabe - For the most part, the cars and deer don't meet (luckily).

Patricia - Thank you so much for your kind words!

Good morning Kat. We have lots of them around our home and area. We have to constantly spray everything otherwise the would have a field day on our property.

We had a home in New Jersey where the deer will come into that back yard on a regular basic.

Good luck and success.

Hi Kat Palmiotti ,  I enjoy watching deer, but like you say, you have to be careful when driving.

Joe - We kept forgetting to spray and do have some pretty sad looking bushes as a result.

Lou - Thank you for your comments!

Larry - Yes, they can pop out without warning.

I love seeing them on the side of the road but that is as far as it goes. Having 2 vehicles severely damaged makes me wary and I cut my speed whenever I know they are in the area. I don't want another visit to the body shop.

Barbara-Jo - Thank you!  I suspect they are all over our country!
