My out of town client and I were both hungry and we stopped to get something to eat. I mentioned that I wish we could have ordered a Chicken Fried Steak. To this comment she said...

I was floored! She was from North Carolina and I thought that was one of the southern states... How could she not know what it was? I described the meal to her and she sounded interested.

 

That evening my husband and I went out and had one. It sure was good...and was pretty, so I sent her a picture of it. The next day she went out to lunch and ordered one. She was in love after that!

 

Is there anyone here who has never eaten one?

I can't imagine anyone from NC not knowing what Chicken fried steak is.  And man does that plate look good.

I have lived all my life in North Carolina and Georgia. In NC you will find a lot of places with country fried steak (brown gravy) but not much chicken fried steak (white gravy). In Georgia you find a lot of both.

My mother fixed a third version from time to time. She took the same cut of meat and just dusted it with flour not a full batter. Then she cooked it in the skillet with just a little bit of oil until the steak was almost done. She then added gravy and finished cooking it in the gravy.

Chicken fried steak is a luxury! I can't have one very often, because they are super-fattening, but I treat myself to one about once a year. Yummy!

Tom Bailey your first comment made me realize that some people liked brown gravy on their chicken fried steak. I normally see people here with brown gravy on it but every now and then...

That second version of the same dish... I like to make my pork chops like that. They REALLY comes out good. I don't eat much pork but when I have pork chops I like fixing them like that.

Myrl Jeffcoat in my old age I can't do fried anything very much.

Michael Thornton you are cheating your self by eating Chicken Fried Steak at Cracker Barrel. I have had it there and they can't do it justice. Try a BBQ place or a Steak House. Then you will know how great they can be!

Yes I have had that many times though not a lot in the last few years. I have limited the fried foods opting for grilled or baked without the skin and leave the gravy off because of the cholesterol. Sometimes eating right is no fun.

Sussie, I've lived in Texas for four years and was introduced to chicken fried steak.  I had never heard of it before and I have never had it or saw it on any menu since!
