Carlsbad Conserves Water

How About You?

The California drought is big news and has been for some time. With more stringent restrictions in place to conserve water, especially irrigation, many people and businesses are doing what they can to reduce their water usage.

We are now in a Stage 2 "Drought Alert" which means mandatory restrictions for residents and businesses. Obviously additional voluntary measure to help are a bonus.

Water Conservation Tips

No doubt more can be done to encourage, and maybe enforce, adherance to these restrictions, especially on the irrigation side - people watering multiple times per weeks, borker sprinklers, water flowing down the road. I know of some people who have been reported to their HOAs for not following the current restrictions in Carlsbad.

Here are the revised water use rules in Carlsbad

Carlsbad Conserves Water signThe City of Carlsbad, in addition to making its own improvements to save water (e.g., installing water-saving fixtures, tearing out turf, and expanding the water recycling program), is encouraging residents to join the water saving campaign and use the Carlsbad Conserves signs to let others know they are doing what they can to save water.

These free signs are available at several locations - I just got mine at the Georgine Cole Library in Carlsbad Village:

City of Carlsbad Senior Center
799 Pine Ave.

City of Carlsbad Faraday Administration Center
1635 Faraday Ave.

Georgina Cole Library
1250 Carlsbad Village Drive

Of course one question that comes up is...who pays for these signs? And are they recyclable?

Good morning, Jeff --- it's important for us Californians to be aware and take action to participate in saving water during these difficult times.  There also needs to be some long term infrastructure improvement strategies in place to address this issue.

Such a sad state of affairs for a beautiful state but glad that it is being addressed and hopefully overcome. It amazes me how different it is everywhere across the US. We have had so much rain this year I wish we could send some your way.

Jeff, droughts are a horrible thing, it is good to know people in Carlsbad are doing what they can!

We are on a well, as many here are. I am aware that we still need to conserve, which we do! No watering the lawns, only the tomato's and flowers, etc. I am always amazed that people just don't pay attention that there are limits!

I feel for you Jeff thats such a beautiful area and to see you guys in a drought when we have had our rainiest year in a long long time makes no sense

We all need to do our part for sure.  I've heard some whispers about a potential el nino this year, hopefully that brings in some rain

Good for you and Carlsbad, Jeff. SF is conserving well, too, but a number of other communities still need to get with the program.

We already do most of the conservation stuff.  We just hate mandates.

Since our water usage isn't particularly high, will we expected to cut back less?  Probably not.  Will we be punished for not reducing usage enough?  Probably.

We have a bucket in the shower to capture water and then we take the bucket out to water the plants.

How about budgeting to put adequate water storage facilities in place?  Budgeting does NOT mean hitting up the customer for additional fees or raising other costs.

That is so true. One would think, given the drought issues that occur regularly here, that the government would do a better job and gave a more rigorous and proactive infrastructure to address these issues. This is not new!

Thank you. It seems that many parts of the country are getting more rain than they need.

It is still beautiful, and many plants and trees are adaped to the drought-like weather we have most of the time. Lawns will regrow

This is serious. I hope you guys can break this drought cycle soon. Those that don't do what they can to conserve water are very foolish.

I think many people are being more careful about their water usage, and around the state, too. But not everyone. This is something we live with much of the time, it's just more serious right now. And conserving water anywhere is a good idea, as you point out

It's pretty ironic. There are many parts of the country who seem to wish they had less rain. Can't change that

Yep I have heard that a number of times. Hopefully we see some benefit it is does happen and El Nino doesn't pass us by. But then we could get slammed and have all those issues. Time will tell

Agreed. You still do see a lot of waste and it's not just residents, but businesses and the government.

I think you're right that people don't like mandates - looks at cell phone usage while driving! And the problem is that many people DO the right thing but because others don't and they look at per capita consumption, the restrictions become necessary. And still many seem to just feel they are above this
