San Francisco resident Steve Dombek makes a pretty compelling case for taking some of the city's unnecessarily wide streets, starting with one particular block of McAllister Street (pictured above), and putting rows of apartment buildings in the middle of them. It's not as crazy as it seems, once you see his diagrams and comparisons to European cities with much narrower streets, and the plan could provide much needed affordable housing in cities where development sites are in high demand and where the extra wide streets, originally built for trolly cars and such, have outlived their purpose.
