Off season in Aspen, Colorado

You can really tell that it is officially off season here in Aspen, Colorado. Once the ski mountains close, everybody that is here to ski, goes home and the town becomes as it once was, a very quiet, little mountain town. I actually love it when it gets quiet like this, it feels like we have our town back again. You can walk down the street and know almost everybody that is out and about enjoying the spring weather. We have had a really long winter this year, it started to snow in October, I think we are almost out of the freezer box now. There are lots of new listings this year already. Last year at this time we had a very limited supply of inventory. Since sales have been very slow this last year, some of the listings that are out there have been around the whole year. I had lots of people looking last spring and summer but there was not much to see. This year, there are lots of places to see but nobody to show them too. I certainly hope that once we get through this off season, things pick up. Our next season officially starts about the second week in June and goes through October. Based on the amount of inventory, pending I have clients that are willing buyers, sales should be good. The economy in the United States right now doesn't seem to be very good, it usually takes awhile to filter to this area. Aspen is always going to be a place where people with lots of money want to own a piece of the pie. Even if they only come here a couple of times a year, they can tell their friends, "We have a place in Aspen". It gives them clout and is very prestigious to own a place in Aspen, Colorado. I remember when I first moved here in 1980, I had the chance to buy whatever I wanted to. A three bedroom, Victorian, right in town cost only $76,000! That same place now sells for $4.5 million, if I would have only known. I was only 23 years old at the time, in my wildest dreams I would have never guessed that it was possible for homes in Aspen to sell for millions. Aspen was a quaint little ski town with lots of young people like myself. We didn't make much money but we were a very tight community and had lots of fun!

It's the same in the White Mountains of New Hampshire , Loon is open one more week then it's quiet for a few months. But in order to buy next years ski property and do a little personalizing we too get a push when the kids get out of school (mid June) and it stay busy through foliage in late October. I have noticed over the years the slow season get shorter each year as more people make this their home, or don't leave at the end of ski season. Thanks for the post I enjoyed your thoughts.Steve

I agree, our off season is shorter than it used to be. Usually, the summer months were pretty quiet but more and more people are coming now and it is actually busier in the summer than it is in the winter. Our population of full time residents is only about 2500 but the population of owners is about 6500. A large majority of our places are second and third homes, it keeps the property management companies plenty busy!
