Solar Energy
Considering building a new home in Huntsville, Alabama or purchasing an existing home? The following
might be something of interest to you if you want to cut utility bills and go green.
A challenge faced producing solar energy is collecting and storing it in an efficient way. The early days of capturing solar energy saw about 15% efficiency and is now up approximately to 35% for most solar panels. Controlling its flow has also had its problems.
Tesla Powerwall
Tesla Motors -yes, the car company, has announced Tesla's new Powerwall for residential use and Powerpack for commercial use has taken some 38,000 orders for the units. These units are said to offer 92% in direct current efficiency.
How It Works
The Powerwall battery uses a lithium ion battery incorporating similar technology used in the Tesla automobiles charging batteries generated by solar panels. During the evening or on cloudy days the battery supplies energy back to your home instead of sending it out to the public power grid. The powerwall also supplies energy during power outages for emergency use.
The Powerwall installs on an interior garage wall, basement or outdoors as the unit is weather resistant. Depending on a homes power requirements multiple batteries can be installed together providing up to 90kWh of available power. Each Powerwall battery is approximately 51.2" X 33.9" X 7.1" deep.
One of the first things to consider for any cutting edge home technology such as this is the cost. The average home is said to use approximately 4.5 kWh daily and according to Tesla Motors specs, the home sized batteries cost $3,000 for the 7-kWh model and $3,500 for the 10-kWh model. Each unit comes with a 10 year warranty.
