Today the Entertainment Capital of the World is also the Basketball Capital of the World as the 2007 NBA All-Star Game is played in Las Vegas. An estimated 250,000 visitors are in town for the game and the three-day weekend, and the city is really putting on a show.
On the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard, the MGM Lion is suited up for the West All-Stars.
Not to be outdone, the New York New York's Statue of Liberty sports an Eastern Conference All-Star jersey.
Las Vegas has been seeking a professional sports franchise for a long time, but leagues and owners have always been concerned about the association with sports betting. Apparently that concern is softening with the NBA, as witnessed by some of the huge All-Star ads on the Luxor and MGM Grand hotels.
Basketball fans were treated this week to the NBA Jam Session at Mandalay Bay, as well as the Skills Competition, 3-Point Shooting, and Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday. Today, the All-Star game wiill be played at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV. The game will be televised at 8 PM EST on TNT.
