Do You Need Specialized Moving Services for Your Relocation?

Some people who are relocating a distance, whether you are selling or not before you move, need specialized moving services.

It's important to think about these things in advance, and to know the questions you need to ask the movers you are interviewing for the job of moving your precious goods across the country.

Packing to moveWhile there are some standard questions you should ask the movers you are interviewing (unless you are DIY, say with PODS or some other similar service), when there are specialized circumstances you need to know upfront - there are may be additional costs, including insurance, and some vendors may simply not be able to accommodate your needs.

Here are some specialized moving services you might need:

1. Moving 1 or or cars; even a bigger deal with antique or special vehicles

2. Moving a boat (some you may just have to take by water)

3. Expensive or particularly fragile or large art work and sculpture

4. Tractors, lawn mowers, snow blowers (yep, you won't need those here in SoCal!), all terrain vehicles, ski-doos, tramoplines, RVs

5. Antiques

6. Horses or other livestock

In addition, the area you are moving from and/or to may require specialized moving services. Here's why...

Moving trucks are huge, but cannot navigate narrow streets and drives, or very hilly areas (picture San Francisco!). In those cases a shuttle truck might be needed to move your household goods from your home to the big van, or from the van to your home in the new location. There usually is a charge for shuttle services, since it may take multiple shuttle moves to and from the house to the van, although they might allow a certain number of shuttles included in your overall fee.  Either way, you need to ask!!

Having moved many times and internationally, as well, I'm sensitized to the issue of how important movers are to the process. But lots of people treat this as an after-thought. Great job and great topic, Jeff.

I've moved a bunch of times and worked with clients who have, especially a long distance, and you just can't make assumptions about what they can and will move, and how, or won't. And the costs can add up

I've moved a bunch of times with a variety of movers, so I've learned a few things. And I've had some clients with some challenging moves, too

I appreciate the compliment

Thanks for your post, Jeff Dowler CRS. We need to be aware of the challenges of moving, especially if we have the extra items you mentioned.

Eventually, our toys own us.

Jeff- excellent topic.  Movers need to know how they will navigate steps or small streets, for example.  We've moved our bass boat a few times.  And we've had to have a special crate made for our mounted turkey (in flight) and ducks.  Not inexpensive.

Thanks for the compliment. It can be overwhelming for people who are moving, especially a distance, with so many considerations. And often people are not aware of all that this can cost, especially for specialty items. And the location of the home, the old one or the new one, can be a challenge in some cases. The list goes on and on about the things about a move that people need to be aware of.

Thanks for stopping by. You're right about the toys. And people don't necessarily think about the issue of making a move with these things until it happens. I know some people who have given them up because of the hassle and cost of moving certain items.

Oh yes steps and small steep driveways can be a real chore. I always feel for the movers having to deal with these issues. And in some cases it can be a real challenge with certain pieces of furniture because of narrow hallways, steep stairs and so on.

Sounds like you have had some good moving experiences, too!

Great post and video is well done.  Having relocated to 4 different states I can attest. But Boston to CA?!  Wow!  An entirely new culture for you!  Insurance is a big one.  Love the questionnaire topic at the end.

Hi Jan Green

Yes MA to CA was an adventure. But had travelled here many times so not as big a shock as it could have been. Things ARE different - es. the way we do RE as compared to back east. Can't beat the weather.
