What is the difference between a leads group and networking group?

Many times I hear these two terms mixed up. I would like to clarify what a leads groups is versus a networking group.

I have been lead ambassador of several groups and started many.  I have started leads groups as well as networking groups. Each group serves a different type of purpose.

Networking Groups:

Networking groups are usually open to anyone who wants to join. You will not have to fill out a long questionnaire to make sure that no one else does your line of work. Networking groups meet either weekly or monthly and are sometimes referred to as mixers. Networking groups are great to be regular attendees at because you will continually meet new people.  There are many of these networking groups that are free to join. Many are promoted by your local chamber of commerce, young professionals network, and many others.

Leads Groups:

Leads groups serve a distinctive purpose which is to generate leads for each other. Typically there is only one person per industry. Also typical is that these groups charge money to be part of their group.  An example would be  BNI. There are even some local chamber of commerces that have leads group within them.  If you are interested in a leads group remember that you will be required to give leads as well.

These are the main differences in the group types. Both work very well, and doing a combination of the two will really help with generating a continual stream of leads.

Good morning Jennifer. I have no interest in doing the chamber stuff, but am asked to be a speaker from time to time. I know if is supposed to be a social gathering, but I am there to do business. Networking groups work much better for me.

Way cool. I would like the leads group idea. It makes good sense.  The local chamber was a bust - too many real estate people!

Joe Petrowsky I too prefer networking groups over chamber events. However, I have met people at Chamber events that have added value to my life.

Debb Janes Its pretty simple to start your own leads group. Get a core group of four people and if each of you find two people to join, you will have a group of 12. It will take off from there!

I have never heard the differences between these two groups Jennifer. Now I know and can see they have similarities but serve different purposes.

Debbie Reynolds They have definite similaries but are different. Some are more comfortable in a leads group and some in a networking group. Some like both!

Probably a decade ago I joined LeTip in Monterey, CA. From your description, this was a "leads" group. Was great for chiropractors but not for real estate. At least I didn't get any leads from it but was still required to come up with a certain number for others. This I could do, but the differences in professions ($ value) just didn't make it worth my while and I quit.

Hella Mitschke Rothwell Yes, LeTip is a leads group. Every group has a little different personality and sometimes you have to go through a couple groups to find one that works well for you. Have you tried any ohters?

I've been going to Carmel Chamber of Commerce mixers when I'm in California. But, except for the annual meeting, the same people keep showing up and I already know them too well. It just ends up being a social gathering instead of a networking opportunity. I have much better luck with my board membership in the Carmel Art Festival that I help organize every year. GREAT networking opportunities because it's very high profile.
