Golf Tournament for a good cause, the Crohns and Colitis Foundation  -  Yesterday I was fortunate to play in this wonderful organizations golf tournament at the Omni Interlocken Resort and Golf Club in OmniBroomfield, CO. The weather was not very cooperative but I think everyone that played had a very good time and were all happy to donate to the cause.

I have a son who was diagnosed with Crohns disease at the age of 16. We knew very little about it at the time but have learned so much over the past 7 years. Our son lost almost 70 pounds in a matter of months and was so sick by finals week his sophomore year that he was curled up on the couch, pale and weak from this nasty disease. As parents we should have responded much quicker, he was working hard to lose extra weight because he knew it was adversely affecting his diving, so we assumed the weight loss had more to do with extreme dieting than any type of disease, until he told us during the last week or two that his stomach was constantly hurting.

We scheduled a visit with a doctor who sent us to a GI (gastro-interologist) and he went through the process of discovering his new disease, I suppose we were fortunate that he was young when he got the disease, apparently the older you are when you get it, the more devastating it can be, but as parents we wish we would have responded much sooner than we did.

The first thing was to get him on medications that would severely lessen the effects of Crohns, and that is exactly what we did, unfortunately the medication is stupidly expensive, nearly $1000 a month, but it worked so we continued with the doctors and eventually switched doctors when he went off to college, what a blessing in disguise that was, the adult GI, suggested some less expensive medicines, and they have worked wonderfully ever since, but many kids and adults alike are having to stay on the more expensive medications and this is where the Crohns and Colitis foundation are doing wonderful things to expedite a cure for this terrible disease and offer camps for children that have Crohns or Colitis so they can realize they are not alone and that there are plenty of other kids just like them in the world that are going through similar issues.

I will gladly support this cause and look forward to doing my part to help in the discovery for a cure, if I can donate, or raise funds or help in any other way I will gladly do so, in fact I am seriously looking into offering a percentage of my commissions to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation until they can discover a cure.

Hey John you are right the weather has been jacked the last 2 days and I am sure all who braved the rain did enjoy the cause. I had no idea about your son that is terrible. How do you get it and how do you cure it?

David Shamansky Neither of those answers is known, we have read several books on the subject and the medical world is searching for a cure, they are close, but none yet and they have not found one thing that they can say actually causes the disease.

From the books I have read, mostly from Crohns patients they believe it comes from how processed and refined and pasteurized our food is, we are humans and need to eat a little dirt now and then, the foods we eat are so sterile that our immune system can actually turn off, or at least seriously weaken because  they have nothing to fight.
