The Detached Retina - A Follow Up!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Fresh Eyes For Your Home

Is the moral of the story don't get old? Absolutely not - the important thing is to have good doctors.

If you had read my earlier post We Planned, God Laughed and I'm Not a Happy Camper! you'll know that we had a trip planned out to the beautiful state of Oregon for July 1.  Well, vacation interrupted due to a sudden detached retina in my husband George's right eye!

He had an initial emergency surgery on July 1 - unfortunately unsuccessful.  The second emergency surgery was done yesterday - hopefully successful! Recovery is not easy - I am definitely going to be his "beck 'n' call girl (would love to get paid like the call girl) for the next 2 weeks but heck, I love the guy.

Moral of the story - if you have floaters-speak to your doctor - you are at risk.  If you see a flash and/or a curtain in your eye, call your doctor immediately! And, if you have a choice, go to a large teaching hospital for your surgery - they are best equipt with the most advanced surgical methods!

Isn't it amazing how these things can often come up when we are making other plans - like a vacation!  I've had a couple times in life with my plans were interrupted by THE PLAN!

a few more prayers.

Oregon will still be there...whenever you finally get to go.

Good luck being at anyone's beck & call, that's a skill I've not mastered yet, no matter how much love there is.

Good morning Joanna Cohlan,

I'm sorry to hear about the first unsuccessful surgery but feel sure this second one will take care of things for George. He couldn't have a better care giver and I'm sure there will be a reward for Joanna's "call girl" I mean "beck in cal girl" role!! Take care of yourself too!!

Good morning Joanna.  Interesting post as my wife has had floaters for years.  She gets her eyes checked every year and the doctors have not mentioned anything about a detached retina.....

Hi Claude Labbe wise words and yes, this is not an easy role for me.  But yes Dorie Dillard I will rise to the occasion and be a good nurse.  And what can I say James Dray - this is New York with New York docs!

The older I get the more I worry about what would happen if.  My correction is HUGE.  And when I recently got new contacts, I found myself in the grocery store after two months with them, unable to make out facial features on anyone. Scary, but a trip to the eye doctor and we are figuring out the right fit, contact lens type and my astigmatism correction.

I'm not so sure Grant Schneider - I am a very strict Nurse Ratchett.  Chris Ann Cleland I have heard you comment on this issue a few times and it sounds like your vision correction issues are significant.  I too have astigmatism and I am no doctor but I really believe that you will be doing yourself a favor by going to a teaching hospital to sort out your issues.  I believe that you may need to go to a specialist - not just an eye doctor.  Do not waste time as I have learned all too well.

Oh dear. I'm bummed to hear he had to go through this twice. :( Poor George. Oddly, the person I know who had this happen - also had to have it done twice. Curious. His surgeries were in Seattle.

As for Nurse Joanna. Do you wear heels with your white mini dress?  George is a lucky guy, regardless of what you're wearing.

Those are the exact symptoms my husband had too when he rushed to the doctor. There is no waiting when that happens. Glad your guy is hopefully on the mend. He has an excellent "call girl".

Hi Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 and Debb Janes .  George is a lousy patient and has not been lying on his stomach as much as he should be, but when we go back to the doc tomorrow, the verdict with respect to the retina being attached and healing will be in!  Then, the vision part has to come back as the gas bubble dissipates.  I, quite frankly have been more like Nurse Ratchett because he is so difficult! And, I am wearing a frumpy moo moo because he has been so bad!

Hi there Endre Barath, Jr. and Debbie Reynolds - both of you have had this experience so you both know how scary and difficult it is.  I wish he were a better patient but I can not do more than smile, then yell, and then give up!

Tell George to enjoy having his own Nurse Ratchett.

It's tough keeping a good man down!
