How long since you saw a ditch full of cattails?

When my kids were little they would have waded into this ditch and brought me a few cattails home for me to put in a big vase on the floor.  I loved them.....the kids too of course!

I have not seen a decent bunch of cattails in years and years but there in Bald Knob AR a few days ago I found this patch.  I almost parked my car to go gather a few but decided I did not have permission and I could be arrested.  But I did take a picture.

I must admit that I also found them an easy subject to paint when I started painting pictures.  This looks almost like a painted picture!

Good Saturday morning Barbara. There is ditch of cattails just down the road from my house. I have to make sure that the fluff doesn't get into my koy parts and take root.

Barbara, I was in single digits the last time I saw a group of 'em like that. They were our camping lanterns when cut and dipped in kerosene. What a great time it was growing up on the lake in Summer. Thank You!

Michael, I did not know they were dangerous!  Perhaps that is why we see so few now.

Kevin, I never heard of that use for them.  I'll bet you roasted weiners and marshmallows too!  Sounds like great fun.

Barbara S. Duncan I never knew cattails could be dipped in kerosene and used as camping lanterns.  We learn something new ever day on Active Rain!  I grew up on a small lake where cattails grew in abundance.
