I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND!

NO, I don't!

I recently received an email from a "friend" who wanted to let me know she was listing her house with another agent and hoped I would understand.  While I am pretty easy going, I couldn't let this one pass.  I told her NO, I DIDN"T UNDERSTAND.

You see we have been "friends" for more than 20 years.  When her daughter was thinking about buying a condo, I spend countless hours with them.  And when the daughter decided not to buy, it was what it was.

However, earlier this spring I emailed my "friend" and told her how hot the market was in her neighborhood.  She politely ressponded they had no interest in selling.  So to get this email is just off the charts.  So for anyone who doesn't get it, here's the low down....

Realtors who work 7 days a week, week after week, year after year, don't do it to have fun!  THIS IS HOW WE EARN A LIVING!  So when you list your home with someone you have no relationship with, HOW IS IT NOT PERSONAL!

Just to be clear, I don't expect anyone to GIVE ME the business, but I do expect the opportunity to compete.  On a daily basis, I have people who call me, having heard of my reputation who want me to list their houses, so how is it that people who I know of 20+ years would work with a stanger?  I just don't get it.

I welcome anyone else's insights.

i don't know you, and i don't know the agent who got it. BUT... i might call them, and say, hey its ok. its life, but if you think you owed me a email, can you please tell me, not why i didn't get it. but why THEY got it. ask for real specifics. that will be priceless in learning. it could be the other agent has pics of them and small farm animals. but unless you ask. you wont know. go into the weeds and get very precise.

just my take

I've heard many times that neighbors, friends etc. dont want to list with a Realtor they know because they don't want them to know their financial information, or personal information. Even when telling them we don't really get that into financials, that is the loan officer etc. they just dont feel comfortable.

I've learned to just move on. It sounds like you have a good reputation in the business and those are few and far between, I've had people list with someone else then come begging for me to list it later because the other agent is subpar.

Move on to the next deal and see what happens, have a great weekend!

Gordon - I am learning every day, and I, like you, will never understand some of the decisions your so-called friends make. The problem is, you will probably never understand why, and it may drive you crazy trying to figure it out.

Even if you did find out why you didn't get an opportunity to earn their business, it still may not do you any good. For example, they have a sister-in-law who is now an agent. How is that going to help you.

I have found that it is just better to move on and not worry about the business you lost, but to focus on the business you can still get. Things will work out, and you will never get all the business from friends and family. That is just something you have to learn to live with.

I have been there myself.  There is no explanation sometimes except they just don't want you to know their business.  I don't buy it but I have heard it! Thanks for the follow!

Well I have had this happen a couple of times and while I respect their right to make the decision, I did not understand. However, in order to maintain the friendship I let it go and moved on. Hard to do! I think sometimes, despite the friendship, there is a level of personal information that friends would prefer not to share.
