Sadly, Washington DC doesn't have many Greek restaurants to choose from. We have lots of Italian restaurants, plenty of Ethiopian, a full selection of cuisines from every corner of China, and even several Nepalese. Every time there has been a civil war somewhere in the world which resulted in an embassy closing here in Washington, the chef would open a restaurant somewhere in the city rather than face going home! But if you have a yearning for moussaka or taramosalata, your pickings are slim! To satisfy that urge for grilled octopus, the Parthenon at 5510 Connecticut is a great place to try in the Chevy Chase part of DC.
Upper Connecticut Avenue, just three or flour blocks south of the Chevy Chase Circle, is a quiet part of the city. The apartments and condos were built in the later forties and fifties, which is not a great architectural period in Washington, but Connecticut Avenue is wide here and the trees are tall. Rents and sale prices are lower than the area closer to downtown. There is a Safeway Grocery Store across from the CVS and the local bank. The movie theater plays trendy artistic films and the toy store is locally owned. The restaurants are not trendy, but comfortable and perennial favorites. People and restaurants seem to stay here for a long time in Chevy Chase, DC because it is a great neighborhood!
We have been coming to the Parthenon in Chevy Chase DC for years. We used to take my mother here for lunch since she lived nearby at Knollwood, the Army Distaff home on Nebraska and Oregon Avenues. My husband and I still like to come here for lunch since we can sit outside under the restaurant's blue awning and watch the people walk slowly down Connecticut Avenue.
It is a nice place to sip a glass of wine and eat a Greek salad or a chicken souvlaki. Then we finished off with a cup of espresso and a slice of galaktoboureko! Yum - too bad I had to head back to the office after all that.
If you want a pleasant slightly rustic Greek meal, you should try the Parthenon Restaurant at 5510 Connecticut Avenue in the Chevy Chase section of Washington, DC.
