I'm a lurker at Active Rain.
Long ago, in the early days, I was an active blogger. But I burned myself out, got busy in Real Estate and moved onto other real estate adventures.
But I never left Active Rain, because there's just something about this place. In fact, many good people who I met early on are still here. I won't name anyone because you know them too. They're still leaders here at Active Rain.
One of the coolest things about Active Rain, even with the changes it has gone through, has been the relationships you build. Right now, we are working with a buyer here in Oklahoma who came through an Active Rain referral.
That's good stuff.
I love that Active Rain blogs pop up on my Facebook wall.
And I love that Bob Stewart is back.
And that Karrie stayed with it all the way through.
That's good stuff too.
So now, here we are, in a recovering market in 2015 and Active Rain has changed and continues to grow as it finds its new footing under new leadership by the awesome Ben Kinney.
There's lots of new folks who are finding their way around this place also.
And yet, with all the changes, some things never change.
Some folks on AR are causing a stir, challenging the rules. They say things like, "I want to post content that I didn't write." Or, "I have a political opinion and I'm always just a salty kind of a person and I have the right to say whatever I want 'cause this is America. So there!"
Back in the old days of Active Rain, we went through some pretty rough political times where the whole community just got all stirred up over political opinions. It got so bad, we had a button where you could report inappropriate behavior by others.
SHOCK. DISMAY. "UNFAIR" you cry.
Perhaps, but how sad is it that anyone who calls themselves a real estate professional or anyone who is affiliated with the real estate world would cause the need for such a button. And yet, they did. And it solved the problem because Bob Stewart and Karrie were there to protect and grow the community and keep it healthy by weeding out needy, rude, self absorbed people who didn't understand community.
From what I can tell, it's time to bring our community back into focus. Let's get the button and get back to growing together, learning together, supporting each other in a tough business and...laughing together.
Can we tolerate differing opinions? Of course.
Can we agree to disagree? Of course.
But when ugly breaks out here and then bleeds over to other social media sites like Facebook, it's time to band together and say, "Enough." We have an image to support and ethics to abide by.
Let us bring out the best in each other.
Let us remember that the public doesn't hang out in the halls and alleyways of Active Rain.
And let us remember that the public already has disdain for our profession at times. We need to build up, not tear down.
And finally, to anyone at Active Rain who thinks you can just say whatever you want, whenever you want and generally just be an Active Rain pain in the backside...
You can't. There are community guidelines here for reason.
Abide by them.
And if you don't like them, go make your own Active Rain platform.
So, like Andy was told in the Shawshank Redemption movie (and I add), "You can get busy living (here in the Rain), or get busy dying (by being a pain in the Rain!)"
And that's the way it should be.
That's my 2 cents...
