Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying

By
Real Estate Agent with McGraw Realtors

I'm a lurker at Active Rain.

Long ago, in the early days, I was an active blogger.  But I burned myself out, got busy in Real Estate and moved onto other real estate adventures.

But I never left Active Rain, because there's just something about this place.  In fact, many good people who I met early on are still here.  I won't name anyone because you know them too.  They're still leaders here at Active Rain.

One of the coolest things about Active Rain, even with the changes it has gone through, has been the relationships you build.  Right now, we are working with a buyer here in Oklahoma who came through an Active Rain referral.

That's good stuff.

I love that Active Rain blogs pop up on my Facebook wall.

And I love that Bob Stewart is back.

And that Karrie stayed with it all the way through.

That's good stuff too.

So now, here we are, in a recovering market in 2015 and Active Rain has changed and continues to grow as it finds its new footing under new leadership by the awesome Ben Kinney.

There's lots of new folks who are finding their way around this place also.

And yet, with all the changes, some things never change.

Some folks on AR are causing a stir, challenging the rules.  They say things like, "I want to post content that I didn't write."  Or, "I have a political opinion and I'm always just a salty kind of a person and I have the right to say whatever I want 'cause this is America.  So there!"

Back in the old days of Active Rain, we went through some pretty rough political times where the whole community just got all stirred up over political opinions.  It got so bad, we had a button where you could report inappropriate behavior by others.

SHOCK.  DISMAY.  "UNFAIR" you cry.

We're Living!Perhaps, but how sad is it that anyone who calls themselves a real estate professional or anyone who is affiliated with the real estate world would cause the need for such a button.  And yet, they did.  And it solved the problem because Bob Stewart and Karrie were there to protect and grow the community and keep it healthy by weeding out needy, rude, self absorbed people who didn't understand community.

From what I can tell, it's time to bring our community back into focus.  Let's get the button and get back to growing together, learning together, supporting each other in a tough business and...laughing together.

Can we tolerate differing opinions?  Of course.

Can we agree to disagree?  Of course.

But when ugly breaks out here and then bleeds over to other social media sites like Facebook, it's time to band together and say, "Enough."  We have an image to support and ethics to abide by.

Let us bring out the best in each other.

Let us remember that the public doesn't hang out in the halls and alleyways of Active Rain.

And let us remember that the public already has disdain for our profession at times.  We need to build up, not tear down.

And finally, to anyone at Active Rain who thinks you can just say whatever you want, whenever you want and generally just be an Active Rain pain in the backside...

You can't.  There are community guidelines here for reason.

Abide by them.

And if you don't like them, go make your own Active Rain platform.

So, like Andy was told in the Shawshank Redemption movie (and I add), "You can get busy living (here in the Rain), or get busy dying (by being a pain in the Rain!)"

And that's the way it should be.

That's my 2 cents...

The only problem I see with giving people the ability to report anything and everything is that no matter where you are, there will always be people who are offended by anything that doesn't perfectly allign with their way of thinking. You will never ever please everyone and at any given time I could write a blog post about a legitimate real estate related issue that offends someone by how I wrote it or how I handled it. They have sworn themselves in to the community of PC Police and they feel it's their duty to uphold their own made-up standards.

Nicole, we aren't talking about senorship here.  Disagreeing is an absolute operating principle in the rain.  What we are talking about is when someone becomes and continues to be disruptive.  There is a difference.  One is honest conversation.  The other is bad behavior

Welcome back.  WE all need to learn to just get along.  Best to not even bring up politics on sites like this unless you want to get pounced on.

Rob - when it comes to politics and selling real estate, it is best to keep your opinon to yourself.  If you don't, you'll lose half your potential buyer/sellers.  And you're right about getting people all worked up!

I hear you, but what I'm saying is who's to determine what bad behavior is? The PC Police with thin skin will think anyone with an opposing view is displaying bad behavior. Where does the line get drawn? There is no common sense anymore. There used to be an understood level of good/bad behavior but it no longer exists. Anyone at anytime can get their feathers ruffled and decide whoever ruffled those feathers should be reported. I will certainly be monitoring the future of this site even though I've only been around less than a year. Active Rain is about the people not the platform. You can blog anywhere but you can't find a community of people like this anywhere else. If they start to over-regulate content to appease the vocal minority then this will be a sinking ship.

Hey Bob, well, part of the problem is some of these things are featured and if they weren't featured, only the followers would read it. I think the button for flagging content is appropriate. No sense dwelling on downer stuff, is my belief.

Yo Bob - Good to see this post from you today. I have been mulling over returning to AR to blog more often (i.e. trying to find enough time in the day). I think I may try to do at least once a week, in order to set a halfway reasonable goal, rather than my previous 10/week pace.  :)

Glad to see some folks who left, for whatever reason, are coming back and thinking about coming back.  I feel the new ownership is now in the hands of a responsible steward and many more will return.  Welcome back Bob!

Jason, I am so with you. I remember the days when cranking out 10 blogs a week was top priority. But then so many things changed. I like your goal. Think I'll copy it!

A moving experience!

It's more like the Film booth scene.  'Cause it has triggered our "bite" reflex.

I have been lurking, too, Bob. Glad to see you back posting.  I have been busy with family issues, but will be baaaaak, too.

Love your attitude and I think we will all get along with some behind the scenes help from AR staff.

I think Bob was wise to feature a couple of stupid posts and get feedback.

It is nice to see you back Bob, generally this place is pretty calm though in the past few weeks with a new sheriff in town there has been a significant increase in whining and challenging.

Hopefully this will pass quickly and we can get back to work.
