Friends make GREAT Realtors!

By
Real Estate Agent with MB/Priority Properties, Inc.

I was showing a client some homes near my home and I come to one that I didn't realize until I drove up, that is was MY FRIEND'S house!    She didn't list with me, so I called her up.  Come to find out she knew I was in Real Estate, but didn't want to "bother" me.  WHAT?!  Didn't want to help me feed my family either?  After some more talk, it finally came out that she didn't want to reveal their finances to their friend.

So I'm hear to clear up a misconception............................. Realtor Logo.....................................

  • REALTORS DO NOT CARE HOW MUCH YOU MAKE AT YOUR JOB!  We care that you have the means to pay for whatever pricing level of home we are looking for, but we do not care if you are a good saver or an indebted spender.   If you came into some wealth from a dead realative or won the lottery, none of that matters to us Realtors.
  • REALTORS DO NOT CARE WHAT YOUR BILLS ARE!  We all have bills, so you're in good company!  We don't want you to go get a new car while we're trying to get you under contract in a new home, because that might change your credit score and change your lending - perhaps even disqualify you from getting a loan at the level you want/need.
  • REALTORS DO NOT CARE WHAT YOUR CREDIT SCORE IS!  We show houses to anyone that qualifies for a loan.  Those that qualify have scores in the 500's and up.  You don't need to tell me your score or your weight or education level.
  • REALTORS DON'T CARE IF YOUR MOVING BECAUSE YOUR  BROKE.....Well, maybe we do.  But any of your friends would want to help you for whatever the reason.  In fact, your "friend" Realtor would understand the importance of your move and try to get you some help with the downpayment or state funding help.  A Non-friend Realtor might just be in for a sale and not to take into account, the whole picture.

The jest of the matter is rely on our Lenders to tell us that you are qualified to get a loan for "$x" amount. The Lenders are the folks that care about your credit score, how much you make and what your bills are.  Picking a good lender is another blog.

Just know this.....You CAN have your neighbor, your friend, church member, or family member represent you and the sale of your house and/or the purchase of a new home.  Us Realtors also pledge to an ethics code that keep us from sharing any pertanent information with anyone!  So feel free to tell us what you think we need to know.  Your secret is safe with us!

What a bummer for you. Its true times have changed an all I need from the lender is the price level we can work at. I don't need to know anything more.

Deb, this is SAD, and unfortunately there are friends and even family that choose not to share, and would rather work with someone a little further way emotionally.   I understand your pain!

Deb - Unfortunately you will get this a lot during your career. For some reason there are friends and even family members who will not want to do a transaction with you, and you just have to accept that. Often times it has nothing to do with revealing their finances, they just don't like conducting business with friends/family.

DebCompletely agree with you! Not only did I sell a house to a client I am now helping with his business as I know a lot about what he is doing and he is new enough to the area. But their finances are their business and you can help even more with friends as you WANT to be there for them as friends. Friends should use you as you have a wealth of knowledge and are very thoughtful, kind, and discreet! A great realtor!

Friends and relatives would rather talk about their sex lives with you than about their financial health.

Deb, I love your message. Many friends are concerned about sharing  personal information. Others are concerned that the business relationship may interfere with their social relationship. Life is complicated.

This is a common problem for Realtors. It's difficult not to take it personally.

Amazes me how many times clients, family and friends say they don't want to bother me.  I found out that I was sharing how busy I am, aren't we all in this business, and they misunderstood me to say I don't have time to help them.  So now when asked about how my work is going I say, "Pretty good, but I really need a few more buyers and sellers.  Would you happen to know anyone I could help?"  Seems to be working.

That happens a lot!  I like Anna Hatridge's answer a lot.  It could work for us all.
