Creating Our Own Backyard Farm ~ Phase Two

Canby, Oregon is a great place to have a garden, a farm in your backyard if you wish.  The soil in this area is great for raising all kinds of crops, including vegetables, fruits, trees, flowers, shrubs, landscape plants and grasses.  It is a rich countryside filled with the wonders of what is grown and sent all the United States.  We are fortunate to live in a small town where everyone knows the history and most of their neighbors at least enough to say hello and mean it.  It is called the Garden Spot for good reason.

We moved to Canby a year ago and have been recreating our backyard to fit our life style.  It is not large but actually lives large providing us with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Fabulous Produce

A work in progress and this year an experiment as it is ever changing in the fledgling stage as far as permanent plants, garden art and how it will eventually flow.  I don't have chickens yet, but in the future who knows.  Love those fresh eggs collected that morning. I am of the opinion that a "girl is always allowed to change her mind" as I often do.

I hope you enjoy the video and perhaps it will create a desire to create your Own Backyard Farm, mine is not like the one I grew up on but it will more than do.

I've done more backyard farming (on a very small scale) this year.  There is something realy satisfying about collecting what grows from it.

Myrl it is a very satisfying feeling to have a backyard farm.  The vegetables alone that we have already harvested is amazing.  Ours is not a large scale either, but more than ample for us.  Next year I will probably do some things differently, but it is a learning experience all over again.  My mother was a master gardener and I have the privilege of  weeding (ugh) and harvesting as well.  She taught me a lot and I bring that teaching to the forefront all the time.  I will be rotating the garden and have the plans for that.  Experimenting is great fun I think.  I bet you as well get some great produce from your garden.  Thank you so much for commenting.

Love the garden and the video Mary!

Someday I hope to get chickens too, but it may take a while to get my wife to agree to this.

Bob thank you so much!!  There are already changes in the works on the opposite side of the vegetable gardens and that is half of the fun of it.  Anticipating.  I don't know if I can get my husband to agree either but time will tell.  Thank you again.

Thanks for sharing Mary Stewart . Plants are amazing.  I grew up in Corbett, near Crown Point, where I picked raspberries and blueberries every summer to earn spending money for the school year.  Now I live in Wenatchee, Washington where apples are the King of crops.  Have fun with your backyard farm!

Carol thank you for commenting.  I too grew up although in the valley, picking berries of all kinds, beans, cherries and anything else I could to make money and then worked in the cannery.  Back in those years we as kids were actually  encouraged to work in the fields or anywhere else where we could make money for school clothes and some for college.  Too bad Oregon and elsewhere our kids could no longer do that and learn about working.  We were not exploited just earned money and learned how to manage it.

I am loving our gardens, they are not huge but the produce we are reaping now has been well worth it and it is so fresh with no pesticides.

Mary I converted my small TH backyard this year with 3 raised garden beds.  I've harvested tomatoes, squash, peppers and eggplant so far this year.  Learned a few things about placement of the plants & won't plant the squash again next year as they take up to much room.  Can't wait for cooler weather for some greens.

Mary, raised garden beds are the new rage, and great video.   I put in a garden too, but not a raised bed.

William it is really satisfying.  We have lots of tomatoes from which I have made sauce, salsa and just good eating.  We are still getting strawberries which are sweet and good.  Our corn will be ready soon.  I planted a little late but hopefully it will produce.  What a great thing to do bringing extra to the food shelf and sharing.

Cindy, the first year really is a learning experience.  I planted what I thought was zucchini, at least the label said so, and it has turned out to be some kind of squash, looks like pumpkins but is still a deep green.  I frankly have no idea but fun to wait and see.  I won't go there again as you are correct, takes a lot of room.  So much fun.  We are thinking of adding chickens as well but my husband will need to build the coop and I need to check city regulations.  Fresh eggs would be great.

Joan raised beds do seem to be a new rage, although they have been around forever.  It seems like people have just awakened, funny how that works.  I would like my husband to add more boards to make them higher than they are which is about two feet now.  Three to four feet would be great and a lot easier as we grow in our years.  Gardens are a lot of fun and the produce is amazing.  Next year for us will be a little different and I will be rotating what we have planted so we get good crops next year as well.

Thanks for posting.

Nothing like growing your own! Right now we only have fig trees, black and blueberry bushes/vines and various herbs growing in the garden. I was pretty lazy this year.

Mostly our garden is done now with the exception of garlic (which I just planted for next spring), Kale (on last legs), and peppers.  I have been winterizing the rest of the gardens, cleaning and getting rid of.  I already have my plan out for this coming year on what we want in the garden.  Still a lot left to do, but we are getting there.

It does not sound as though you were lazy, sometimes life gets in the way when one is working.  happy Thanksgiving I hpe it will be filled with family and fun.
