A Little Play Makes All the Work Worth It

Tango tales continue today with what was SUPPOSED to be a training session.  We started working inside but he was being a bit of a slug so we decided to go outside.

The IDEA was that he would go around the arena ON THE TRACK under his own direction, like a good boy.

Tango, of course, had other IDEAS.

Other than constantly running back to Mommy in the middle of the arena and going to check to see if he could go out the gate, he didn't do much of anything "productive".

He did have fun, he was proud of himself and although he didn't "work" he was still a good boy.

Check out the LEAP at about the 1:05-10 minute mark!

In case anyone is wondering, the purpose of the equipment he is wearing is to keep his head in the proper position and prevent him from running through the bridle when I ride.  He has a bit of a "pulling" habit and I cannot win a battle of strength with a 1500 lb beastie.

Also, he cannot exactly be given free rein to run and jump and play right now because he is wearing a special shoe set up for show season.  It makes it a little tricky if he picks up too much steam, it becomes a little more difficult for him to stop and turn as quickly as he "naturally" would.  We also do not want him to get too high strung on his own and clip himself with a shoe or actually pull one off which could damage his hoof.

If you don't like Tango or videos of horses, well, this is my blog and I get to decide!

That was a perfect song.  What kind of special set up on the shoes.  never knew there was anything different for showing?  Hmmmm.  And you've got to turn your phone horizontally to get more in front of and behind Tango and less sky (yeah yeah, I know it's your blog I'm just trying to be helpful.)

Tammy Lankford I thought that was a great song for him.  The shoeing set up includes a longer toe, a cork wedge for more angle and some thin metal weights (about 1-3 oz) that keep him squared up and engage the power from behind.  You can see it the the photo.  We have also added what basically amount to shoelaces that help keep him from pulling a shoe and hurting himself.  That's the best I can explain it, our farrier is magical!  I know, I know! I never think of turning my phone.  Such an amateur

Never seen anything like it.  My niece has a horse that she rides competively. I give her emotional support, but I know very little about the horses.  And I took some lake video yesterday and for got to turn my phone, so who am I to give advice?

Tammy Lankford his shoeing is special for his breed and his job.  Others do special things as well.  Cross country horses often wear cleats similar to football or baseball cleats based on how the turf is that they are running on.  Flipping the phone to landscape is somehow counter intuitive for me.

My neice Raegan has a beautiful horse. I don't know a thing about it.  She barrell races.

I haven't been on a horse since I was a girl.  And well, that was a long long time ago.

Tammy Lankford looks like a lovely quarter horse.  They are beautiful together.  I don't know a thing about barrel racing but I do think it looks like fun.
