I Thought We Were Friends. Why So Cold and Impersonal?

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty

You've Been Mentioned in a Comment

Okay, so I promise, promise, promise that this is the last of this type of post.  Yesterday I wrote, If I Don't Like You It Doesn't Mean I Don't Like You.

Here on ActiveRain, so  many of us go way, way back.  I wasn't here at the beginning of time, but I've been around here long enough to establish some solid relationships with my fellow bloggers.  So much so that when I reply to a comment, I reply as if I'm talking to you face to face.  You know, the way you would do a real live person.  Then came the cold and impersonal Facebook tagging on ActiveRain.  Oh my God, I thought I was going to die. I come here to get away from Facebook, but now there is just no escaping it.  Given our conversational tone on this site, responding to someone by their full name just takes away the from the friendly conversational and personal tone of the comment. Excuse me, but that is not how I talk.

If you are responding to a post by the writer, there really is no need to tag them since they will be notified of comments anyway.  Why not just return to the old 'first name' basis response?  Huh, will ya huh, will ya huh, huh, huh? (in my 5 year old voice)

Many of you would agree with me and I know it based on your response to my post on Wednesday titled Ask an Ambassador: But What If I’m Not a Good Writer?  In which case, a lot of your responded that we should write like we talk.  Not in a million years do I have a conversation with someone and address them by their full name (first, middle, maiden and last name) and then cap it off with their title (in many cases here in the Rain happens to be Realtor).  Do it for the Vine.  Like the kids say "ain't gonna do it.  It's just too freaking impersonal for me.

In my opinion, the exception to tagging is if you are writing a post and you mention someone by name.  Call it tagging if you want, but we've been doing that for years and it's a practice I'll probably continue.  But in the comments, I don't think so.  Nope, I think I'll just stick to a first name basis.  I mean we're among friends here right?

On a final note, you doesn't have to call me Charita Hughley Cadenhead.  You can just call me Charita.  Please and thank you.

Yes, tagging has been overused, and it's kind of annoying. It's certainly useless when you are commenting on the person's post.  I try only to tag people in comments when I really want their attention (e.g. if I'm answering a specific question they asked me).

Otherwise, it's like the "Boy who cried wolf."

Good morning Charita. I am totally with you on this. I never do the full name thing: it is redundant and unnatural.

CHC :), I'm a sparse user of the tagging feature.  Primarily I'll use it in a comment thread to call someone in to another blogger's post, or if I want to make sure that someone who asked a question in my own comment thread knows to come back and that I've answered it.

Hi Charita...We are friends. I haven't been around for a while but this is a first name basis community and why I like it so much. That has not changed.

Hi Charita - I'm with you. About the only time I'll use a tag is when mentioning someone in a blog post (or sometimes as a third party in a comment they may have an interest in).  And I'm not a FB fan either.

Zuhl's I'm wondering how many others did too.

That makes sense Debbie (wanting to get their attention).

Sheila, it's the unnatural part that gets me.

BLiz I can go for that, but I think I'll let the person follow the post until they decide to stop instead of tagging.

I'm with you on that Kate.

I may join the "grab someone's attention school (if the person is not already a part of the conversation Dick.

I used to tag people but quite a few months ago someone wrote a blog post about how annoying it was. I can't remember who it was exactly but after I read their post it was convincing enough to get me to stop using the tag feature unless I really need it for a specific purpose. Personally I don't really mind one way or the other when people tag me in the comments of my posts. If that's how they want to write then to each their own I suppose.

Nicole, definitely to each his own. It's definitely part preference but in part, 8 think it's comes down to people's expectations and social media norms.

Charita, I liked being tagged as I don't often go back to posts to see what someone commented back to me on my comment. So, for that, I'm grateful! I like tagging only for the reason that people know for sure that I've paid attention to their comment and I want them to feel important...oh, well, I guess I'm in the minority. But! I am not a good FB user, I can never figure the damned thing out! It makes me feel so stupid!

Gayle I imagine many share that same sentiment about being tagged and that works out fine.  Tagging definitely has some benefits.  In the end, we all use features for different reasons and our reasons are the best ones that suit us and you can hardly do better than that.
