July 31st (that's today!) is National Mutt Day in Charlotte, and everywhere else for that matter. National Mutt Day was created in 2005 by animal welfare advocate, Colleen Paige, to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters all over the country and to educate the public about the millions of mixed breed dogs desperately awaiting their "fur-ever" homes.
Today, National Mutt Day, is the perfect day to visit your local shelter and adopt a mixed breed dog. Our dogs have all been mixed breeds and have all come from our local shelter and they have simply been the best, smartest, and healthiest dogs we've owned. When people ask me what our dog's breeds is, I just reply "she's a purebred mutt." And if adopting a mutt is out of the question for you today, there are other ways you can show your support on National Mutt Day:
- volunteer to walk a dog.
- donate food and other needed supplies to your local animal shelter.
- make a donation to your local shelter in the memory of a loved dog who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
Latka has a message for you just for National Mutt Day. Have a listen!
Listen to Latka! Here's a list of just four places where you cangive a mixed breed dog in Charlotte its fur-ever home on National Mutt Day:
- Humane Society of Charlotte
- Humane Society of York County
- Carolina Paws Pet Adoption & Welfare Society
- Project Halo
Colleen Paige, the founder of National Mutt Day said it perfectly:
In every heart, there is a hole.
In every shelter, there is love in which to
fill it.
