Growing herbs at Esplanade Golf & Country Club at Lakewood RanchOK, I admit that when I first moved to a gated community I didn't realize that growing herbs in a gated community could be so easy.  We have landscaping and garden work done by the community, but I always wanted to grow my own herbs and have a hand in the gardening.  Call me crazy, but growing herbs and harvesting something I have grown myself, just gives me grounding and love I need to mesh with the healty lifestyle I have embraced here in Esplanade at Lakewood Ranch.  I'm loving it!

I grow herbs because I love creating fabulous meals and incorporating fresh herbs from my "garden" just makes me happy!  Following are herbs you can grow on your Espelanade at Lakewood Ranch window sills and patios, in pots, that continue to give you fresh herbs and perspective on life!

Basil, a cherished Italian annual herb, and grows best in full sun and lush, moist soil. Once the root system is proven, about six weeks after sowing, it endures short periods of drought. Basil is a decent companion with parsley, thyme, and other herbs when grown in a pot that holds at least 5 gallons of soil. For small containers, choose a compact variety such as 'Spicy Bush'.

Chives are grassy, clump-forming perennials with hollow leaves. Essentially, they are tiny onions.  Chives are loved for their leaves and blooms instead of their bulbs. Their aromatic pink-purple spring blossoms are edible. Plant chives in well-drained potting soil, rich in organic matter. They tolerate light shade but do best in full sun. Chives grow well in container gardens. Since they're hardy for Zones 3-10, you can leave pots outdoors year-round.

Cilantro, is really coriander and you can use the tangy leaves or it’s dried, ground seeds. Plant this annual herb in well-drained soil. Cilantro grows greatest in sun, though it abides some shade. Since it has a long taproot, place it in a container garden that is at least 12 inches deep.

I'll add more potted herbs that you can grow in your beautiful Esplanade at Lakewood Ranch home in future posts.
