Is Your Electrical Panel Labeled?

Whenever my buyers have a home inspection, I like to hear what the inspector says as I always learn something !  One thing he is always looking for: Is the electrical panel labeled?

I use to think that I had that covered at my house as the few times I've looked or needed to shut off a breaker ours looked good.  Well a few weeks ago, my husband and I were in there checking on something and realized our electrical panel that used to be so nicely labeled had faded over the years. They are now barely readable except the ones the heating and air conditioning service technician had remarked.

Is Your Electrical Panel Labeled?

Now what?  We need to re-identify them and label them again as it is important to be able to identify the circuits quickly in case of an emergency or if you are doing any work in and around any electrical wires.  I Googled "labeling your electrical panel" and came across a couple web sites with ideas:

What is the simplest strategy to map circuits to breakers in the panel?

Labeling Your Electrical Panel

So take a couple minutes and find out:  Is your electrical panel labeled?  If you can read the current labels take a picture of your panel, print it if possible and keep it in a safe place in case you need to relabel in the future. If your like me and can't read them any longer...... you too have some work to do!

The labels are a very important. When an emergency shut off is needed or service to a portion of the system is needed your breakers are the easiest disconnect. Also when one trips you know what part of the system has been effected.  It's a common issue and often over loked till they are needed.

FYI if that is a Square D panel in the picture some of those blue button AFCI breakers could be part of a recall and should be checked out.
