It is told that during one of his many trips down King's Highway he intended to stop along the way and feast on mullet one of the many seafoods that are caught in Topsail Sound. The mullet were not running when he visited and he had to dine on ham and thus he named the town Hampstead after Hampstead England (Ham'stead).
