Tuesday Travelogue-August 4th

Welcome to the ongoing weekly series called Tuesday Travelogue. We are in our fifty-seventh week!  Each week, some ActiveRain bloggers are spotlighted to take us somewhere we may not have been on some kind of virtual travel (and it doesn't cost a dime!). Here is the purpose:

" to enjoy the ride"

"take a trip without even leaving the farm"

"expand your horizons"

"see through someone else's eyes"

  and hopefully much more!

We are on our alphabetical trip across America. Today we will check out Rhode Island!

I had no idea that little Rhode Island had such a BIG blast until I read Ginny Gorman's localism post! It happened on a beach in Providence, RI...and I'll guarantee you this is not what you've ever seen or heard of on any beach you've been to!!

Victim of mystery explosion upset New England beach has reopened

We now head to a past MeetUp in East Greenwich RI...who knew there was so much going on in this little state? I didn't, did you?? They were hosting to honor Scott Hayes (from Texas) at Bistro 9 thanks to Ginny Gorman and George Suto, who wrote the post. Lots of recognizable faces here (except for Ed Silva who went undercover for the occasion).

MeetUp with ActiveRain members in East Greenwich RI

Fun Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Newport RI, that's the kind of localism post that gets my attention! Thank you, Allison Bernard! (The National Museum of American Illustration is just one place she suggests....)

Now Showing Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center

Well, I guess with Rhode Island it's about the PEOPLE and even though I'm showing a boat (as Karen Hurst explains about that in the beginning),

At Ease Silverton

this post is about those people that Karen (from Warwick, Rhode Island)  came to be close to in ActiveRain and her post is very thoughtful and thought-provoking. Nine years and lots of changes with ActiveRain!  She wrote this in April this year, just before Ben Kinney took over the helm, and it was featured. I would love to see her take on things now!

Please don't forget to comment on these blogposts and I hope that you enjoyed all of these virtual travels. Feel free to join our group:

George Souto I didn't know it had become a Ruesday Travelogue!

Bob Crane as many states as I've been in, I don't think I got close to Rhode Island--and who knew about the luxury homes there? Not me!

Sharon Tara what kind of boat did you get? How far a drive is it from NH? Mansions, huh? Darn I missed those while perusing the posts.

Well, Gary Woltal that sure puts Texas into perspective (a country unto its own).

I'm likin' that idea, Carla Muss-Jacobs, Principal Broker/Owner ! But mostly it's nice to have people stop by and appreciate the destinations we go on together.

Gayle you featured Rhode Island on a day that after severe storms this morning, most of us are still without power. I am typing on my phone and wanted to thank you. Be back soon

George Souto just ribbin' ya...

Karen Hurst how weird is THAT??? I am soooooooooooooo used to power outages that I have regular discussions with my buyers about back -up energy/heat. So sorry to hear about that and how kind of you to even take the time to respond! My "electric" thoughts are with you, fellow Ambassadoress!!

Good info on RI, Gayle. I've never visited, or even passed through RI, but the fun meet-ups the Rainers have up there make it tempting.

Gayle, R.I. is quite the scenic place!  Liz and I lived in the Newport area for about 9 months in 1985/6 and enjoyed our time there, although money was pretty tight back then!

I know, Mike Cooper I had no idea, RI was such a great gathering spot for ARers!

Liz and Bill Spear I wonder if a lot has changed since the 80s in Rhode Island? Why'd you land there??

Gayle, It was my first duty stop after Annapolis graduation prior to heading to my first ship assignment.  9 months of additional training on how to be a surface ship officer, shipboard engineering and damage control.  Money was tight and the area was a bit on the expensive side (1985 and the rent for a house trailer was about $550/month and my base pay was only slightly above $1000/month at the time).  We ran a Sunday paper route together using our Fiero to bring in some extra cash :)

Praful Thakkar Joe Petrowsky our meetups are ALWAYS fun--even better than expected sometimes.

Liz and Bill Spear ahhhh young and stretching the budget, I remember it well! Thankfully you can look back and say that you don't have to do that paper route anymore.

Kristin Johnston, Waukesha Realtor 414-254-6647 yes, I am moments away from doing paperwork for two new listings one of my least favorite jobs...I'm with ya, sista!

To answer your questions:

We got a 39' trawler. I absolutely LOVE the boat itself, but I'm terrified when we actually take it out. Not probably going to keep it very long.  I'm just not meant to be out on the water.

Newport is about 2 1/2 hours from my house.

The Mansions are amazing.  A nice get away weekend to go take the tours!

Love traveling and really love being out on the ocean. Have tried to talk my wife into selling our home and buying an ocean worthy vessel but thus far no dice. lol

Sharon Tara I LOVE the speed on the water! It's in my blood I guess, but meandering around in our pontoon like I did today with Fishhawk Lake friends for hours upon hours (aout 4 altogether til it got a bit too cold) was TREMENDOUSLY GOOD for all of us. We knoshed, we talked, laughed shared quiet gossip (voices DO travel on water!), the five of us had a total blast without the high-powered engine blast!

Alan, maybe someday!

Hi there girlfriend - what a wonderful trip you took us on today - Rhode Island beaches are really beautiful - I love Narragansett and yes Sharon Tara , Newport is jut lovely. Unfortunately smoking can cause all kind of havoc.  That being said, can't wait to experience Fishhawk Lake - in or out of the water.

Joanna Cohlan the buyers may be ramping up for a quicker close than we first imagined. Larry's all for that! It could be in October, but we FINALLY have the boat running again, so I am HOPING AGAINST HOPE that you and George can do the Last Hurrah with me before I hand the keys over!

No worries sweetie, your closing takes all precedence.  We will try to make our plans so that we see you on the first leg of the trip  but if it doesn't work out, we look forward to spending time with you wherever you live!  And of course, there are motels!
