THAT is why I LOVE THE CLOUD!

It happened last night....I went to turn my laptop on but it just gave me the "spinning wheel of death" as I affectionately call it.  The computer was just thinking and thinking and thinking, and the wheel was turning and turning and turning.  Then it even flashed from yellow to blue and back again (all while giving me the spinning wheel of death).  Slightly frustrated and afraid, I closed it and went to dinner.  I again around 7pm,  but it was still the same.  I couldn't even log in to see what was wrong.  I took it to my techie neighbor and he couldn't even revive it.  It was official - my laptop crashed.

oldlaptopI should have known to expect it.  I had put duct tape on the side of it months ago because it was creaking and cracking every time I opened it up.  Don't get me wrong, I loved that old laptop.  It had gotten me through several years of selling homes, keeping up with reports, watching Youtube videos, projects with the kids.  It was a good machine, and it served me well.

When the laptop died, I wasn't really worried.  Even though it was about 8pm, mylaptopwe headed out to Fry's Electronics.  We ran into a great guy there who helped me out.  We found a new sleek computer - and it's REALLY FAST.  I got one witha Quad-processor, HDMI capabilities, and Windows 8 (I have the ability to get Windows 10 but I don't want to do that just yet since it was just released).  I even got a cute new wireless mouse that looks like an owl! (see photo below)

new mouse

We got home around 9pm and plugged in the new computer.  After it got charged up, I loaded my new Microsoft Office 2013 (which was an upgrade from the old Microsoft 2007 I was using before), loaded my Dropbox and then I was all set.  All of my files are there....right where I left them in the cloud.  All of my emails loaded right into my Outlook, and every client contract and file were right there where I needed them to be.

It took me about 30-minutes to set up my new laptop and I have everything that I need - and everything that I had before - all installed and ready to go.

If you are not using the cloud yet, I highly-recommend it.  I didn't really have any down time at all.

And THAT is why I LOVE THE CLOUD!

Once you get going with Dropbox Liane Thomas - Corona & Riverside Real Estate you will find that you almost can't live without it.  The interface is easy to use, you can download it to your computer, you can share files with others, and you can access everything from anywhere.  I use it on my phone, my tablet, and my laptop...but if I ever needed to use a shared computer at the office, I can even access my stuff there.  It's awesome!!

I suggest backing up different things to different services.  That way you can maximize your "free" space and always know where to find your stuff based on where it is backed up to.

Melissa Hailey I agree with having a back-up to the back-up!   I am concerned about security and the ease of retrieving data.

Glad to see you were back up and running in no time. I agree the cloud is great. I store all my open and closed real estate files in ziplogix, which now has enough storage for photos. I also store documents and photos on several various media drives, just in case the cloud goes down.

I have not really used the document storage in Ziplogix.  Pamela Seley, REALTOR® Do you find it easy to use?

Yes, I do. I just log in to my zipforms account, and then I can upload documents and photos from my computer, create separate file folders, in addition to creating and storing client real estate contracts. Also has unlimited storage. I like the new features they've added.

p.s. the con is the files are kept for up to 5 years. If I want to keep them longer, I would have to download and save on computer or another media drive (so I guess it wouldn't be in the cloud after that time period).

Ginger Harper I don't have any idea.  There were some great discussions here in the comment section, and then all of these "anoymous" comments came through.  Very weird!

Hey Bob Stewart can you look over the comments here?  Not sure what happened there with the anonymous commentators.  Did we get hacked??

I am a huge fan of duct tape...especially now that it comes in so many designs Bob Bloom. However I didn't chose the plain black duct tape when I needed to tape my old laptop together!!!

Ginny Harpet and Melissa Hailey ~ these are obviously spam. I've report them. I've seen them on several other posts today. Very annoying....

I don't know why the term "the cloud" became so popular, but I agree it's great to have back up. I recently discovered DropBox and it makes sharing photos SO much easier.

I don't really care what they call it...the Cloud is certainly fine with me.  As long as I have a place to store all of my information so that I have it whenever I need it, on any device I need it on.  That's the important part.  And yes, Pat Starnes Dropbox does make it easy to share photos and files.  My dad loves to share photos on Dropbox with both me and my sister.  It's super convenient for families and businesses.
