One of the many charms of Bay Street, Historic BeaufortIn a soon-to-be aired episode of HGTV's "Vacation House For Free," we will get to hear the owner of the feature home proclaim that her street, Craven Street in Beaufort's Historic District, is the "prettiest street in America."

Fair enough.

From its circa-early 1900s Victorian row in Beaufort's Old Point neighborhood, to a stunning block and a half which features the spectacular Rhett House, The old Craven House Inn, The Historic Rectory for the St Helena's Parish and the Secession House, where some of the earliest talks of seceding from the Union took place in the 1850s, Craven Street is definitely ONE of the prettiest streets in Beaufort, making it, by default, one of the prettiest streets in America, because Beaufort is one of the prettiest towns in America.

So, I got to thinking, what are some of the other pretty streets in Beaufort? I mean, I've been around, I've been selling real estate for almost 17 years, so I know my stuff, when it comes to attractive Beaufort streets.

Here are, in no particular order, some of the most attractive residential streets in Beaufort. Remember, there are all kinds of variables, from architecturee to tree coverage, to the way a street meanders.

1) Bay Street -- Sorry to start out with something so cliche, but a drive up Bay Street, between Church Street and the old Courthouse, can still be appreciated after almost 20 years living Beaufort. As you drive away from dontown Beaufort, and pass Church Street, Bay Street rises gently and turns ever so slightly in front of some of the grandest homes in South Carolina. On a breezy day, the prevailing southeasterly breeze moves the moss back and forth, and to the left, of course, is the majestic beauty of the Beaufort River.

2) Laurens Street -- From its tiny cottages on the interior of the Old Point, to Tidalholm, aka the "home where they filmed the Big Chill and Great Santini," which looms at the end of the street and lords over the Beaufort River, Laurens Street has the additional benefit of passing by "the Green," an entire city block which will never be developed.

3) Ridge Road -- One of the newer roads in Beaufort, this Cat Island road gently winds along the tributary  creeks of Distant Island Creek, Ridge Road has quietly become one of most attractive and exclusive streets in Beaufort.

4) Sunset Boulevard-- This street on Lady's Island is one of the "organic" beauties in Beaufort, developing naturally over decades. Closest to downtow Beaufort, Sunset Boulevard starts with older, ranch style homes, progresses to the massive,  newer mansions, and then ends as a dirt road. All of the waterside homes have unobstructed views of downtown Beaufort.

5) Bartram Drive -- This is a sleeper, located in the neo-traditional (newer neighborhood designed to look like old Beaufort) neighborhood of Battery Point. But this short street runs through the heart of  Battery Point, and, as much as any neo-traditional neighborhood in Beaufort, the developers nailed the feel of turn-of-the 20th century coastal towns, with this almost perfect blend of architecture, street "movement" and tree cover.

6) The Habersham Traffic Circle "Oak"-- Not a street at all, but an intersection of 4 streets in one of Beaufort's best neighborhoods, the majestic legacy oak serves as the fulcrum for Market Street, St Phillips Blvd, James Habersham  Bvd, and Harford. The oak also serves as the transition point from Habersham's "town centre" to the single-famile section of the neighborhood.
