It’s Friday night and in downtown Farmville a crowd is gathering. There are blankets, and lawn chairs and, oh yes, a princess. That’s right, about 30 shining-faced little ones are gathering at her feet for a smile and a hug.
Wondering what could have been the impetus for such a varied gathering? It’s the first night of a beloved Farmville tradition—Stars Under the Stars—and the movie is the 1955 Disney animated classic, Cinderella. And although not Cinderella herself, the visiting princess is one of many volunteers who make Stars Under the Stars possible.
Now in it’s 18th season, Stars Under the Stars is a summertime outdoor movie screening series that began as the brainchild of Leadership Farmville. It is run and produced by an all volunteer committee. The screenings are held on the small but inviting green space in front of downtown Farmville’s versatile Crute Stage on the second fridays of June, July and August. The screenings are a variety of family favorites and classics. Since the first series in 1998, Stars Under the Stars has shown such films as E.T., Casablanca, To Kill a Mockingbird and Grease.
This year’s lineup has been equally stellar, including Cinderella, followed by the beloved musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The 2015 series will be wrapping up with cult favorite Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark to be shown Friday, August 14th.
A typical night at the series begins at 8 and includes an introduction of the film, plus a few rounds of trivia hosted by the evening’s emcee. A good knowledge of the movie will get you a ticket for a free bag of popcorn. There are also door prizes. As the final shades of daylight melt into darkness the feature event begins.
Many folks bring picnics and snacks, but it’s hard to resist a trip to the old-timey popcorn machine. Emitting a pool of warm golden light and an equally warm golden smell, the machine provides an ample supply of buttery kernels. Cold drinks, water and candy are also available for purchase.
The event is completely free. So, grab a lawn chair, sit back and relax. Feel free to bring the whole family and all your friends, but please keep your pets at home as they are not permitted at the event.
