Firefighters in steep terrain and rugged conditions in California are fighting nearly two dozen wildfires that have torched more than 134,000 acres, according to state fire officials.

That's nearly three times the state's 5-year wildfire average of 48,153 acres for this time of year, according to statistics posted by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

At 60,000 acres, the Rocky Fire is the largest ongoing blaze. It's led to evacuation orders for more than 13,000 people as it feeds on drought-parched vegetation that hasn't seen fire in many years, according to Cal Fire. The fire which covers Lake, Yolo and Colusa counties northwest of Sacramento was 20% contained.

Last year the two weeks since it ignited, about 2,000 firefighters have battled the blaze. Nearly half of them — 900 — are inmates with California Department of Corrections. They receive $2 per day wage for fighting fires.  Watch this video Inmates help to put out fires

It hurts to know how many wild animals have perished and how many are displaced from their  natural habitat. Then there is the human element. Those poor people. I know some have lost everything even lives. I hope God blesses this area with plenty of water and soon.

I believe the news says they save 100 million dollars a year to toil this dangerous chore. The inmates volunteered for this dangerous chore.

The nosy Sacramento politicians are not wasting any time investigating .....

Sam I understand that Lake County has had some fires too, we have friends who live in wine country and we were concerned...BTW it is not unusual Inmates have volunteered as far as I can recall in the past 20 years to fight fires and some have perished too.... the worst part is the majority of the fires are always started by humans....Endre

Sam

California is having a challenging year with the wild fires . . . . It's not a problem in using the inmates as part of the firefighting team.

Good luck and success.

I am glad to see that the inmates are helping with the fires. I pray for rain to help stop the fires.
