Never Trust A Google Fad Or End Up Like This

Just a few days ago seven fortunate or skilled (or both) business owners enjoyed a position on page one in Google here in the Orange County area for the search "SEO Anaheim" That was a few days ago. Google, overnight, wiped out 57% of those people (well 4/7 to be exact- they're not cutting people into pieces literaly yet) right off of page one.

Google moved the cups again.

Here's what's left. Me and two other SEO companies. "Good for you, Dave" is not the point of the illustration (below) here. This ranking delivers very nominal paying traffic to my website and it's more for showing off to be honest but here's the point. If I care about this ranking I don't depend on Google local business if I can help it. Organic ranking is still king and best of all, it's guaranteed to deliver leads without an adword budget all arguments about PPC vs Organic conversion rates aside. It's also certain to stick around regardless of the Google daily rearrangement of local results.

What about the other 57% of SEO companies that were there the day before yesterday? They've been erased from existence as far as true visibility is concerned.

Don't allow this to happen to you. Don't rely on Google's one trick pony. Make sure you're so visible that no rearrangement of the pieces will make you disappear.

My Market Is Just Too Competitive

What about syndicate websites like the four that are at the top of virtually every real estate and homes search? Those are starting to take on an advertisement effect and here's where the magic happens if you know what you're selling. Many of the visitors to the big sites come back later and check out who is ranking on the rest of page one that might actually be a local real estate agent. There are a lot of things that consumers want that only a local agent can provide.

When visitors start looking around at who can help them buy or sell, are you there?

People are looking at local agents whether Google puts them at the top of search results or not.

There is great value in the market for the local agent and people recognize that even if people are less than fully aware of the reason for their actions of scrolling down and clicking local agents websites.

The light at the end of this tunnel of the visitor experience with the search results is you.

You are what they need and often even want to complete their search for a home. With very few exceptions, they're not buying one without you- or your competitor. Zillow and the rest would gladly benefit from a vacuum on page one devoid of local agents but consumers are going to connect with local agents one way or another. Leaving it to the chance of being promoted and picked at random by either the syndicate websute du jour or an algorithm as fickle as the 7 pack is a disservice to your own business. That is not online real estate marketing. It's just default giving up behavior.

Do something about it. With or without me. Get every channel at your disposal including this one here on ActiveRain talking about you as a brand and making you visible to the market.

I can help but you can do a lot of it on your own. Do you have a presence on Weebly, Tumblr, Google sites, Blogger, Wordpress.com, your own Wordpress site(s), About.me and literally dozens of other high authority websites? Do you think Google isn't looking closely at those kind of highly trusted platforms?

As always, I'm available for high octane SEO and ranking strategies. The number is up there somewhere. Call.

Sam Shueh It's true you can buy Adwords from now until infinity and throw money forever in support of Google's over $5BN per month earnings and their enormous now $450BN market cap (larger than Exxon Mobile). You can throw money at that solution as Google continually reduces keyword choices and places your ad in broader and broader context so that more clicks are for information and fewer are for purchasing than ever before. If that works then do it. If you get more than $1 for each $1 you put into that system then perhaps you should keep it going but organic search delivers enormous profit. Why do you think Zillow, Trulia, Realtor and Homes invest millions into SEO? The value of Zillow's click traffic due to their efforts is estimated at $4 million per month (Spyfu.com) Most agents are content to lay down and let them take it away. I'm not out to persuade people like that to take action. There are some, however, who are not satisfied to let their market be controlled by external companies. If the click value is worth that much, imagine the value of home sales achieved by taking some of that click traffic back away from the default overlords of your market. One additional home sold in Cupertino, for example, is worth $51,600 on a median $1.72M price, in commission to the Cupertino agent. If you sank a healthy $4,000 a month for a robust SEO campaign to get more visibility and only sold one more home than you would otherwise, is that not worth the investment? What if you made efforts on your own and gained visibility in organic search as a result and sold one more home than not? Trulia says 266 homes recently sold in Cupertino. That sounds like a lot of commission for someone to take even a slightly larger share of the real estate market through any channel or method possible. For some it's worth it to go get it. Leave whatever you like on the table. Someone will sieze the day and go for it.

Google adwords earn billions per month

I did notice that a local map has been added but never really thought about the loss of the three businesses Dave Keys .

Thx for pointing out the 3 vs 7 results.  I just ran a few searches and found that sometimes I'm benefitting and other times getting cut out.  Regardless, I have 2 or more other organic entries on the page so that is helping.  And, I'm hearing from many of my female customers that the name of my company is catching their eye, so that's a good thing.

Thanks for the news Dave Keys - I wasn't aware of the recent update. Glad to see I'm still making the cut as I nervously searched for a few key terms!

Great advice Dave, and will need to get a better presense on those sites, so I don't get cut out.

Dave, great advice, and hope we show up high in the searches, but there sure is not enough time for lots of social sites.

@joan Fortunately, frequency or massive posting to social is not nearly as important as posting the right content in the right channels that lead back to your brand. There are also automation tools that syndicate your content through RSS, etc to where you want. One good one- and it's free, is IFTTT (If This Then That) where you can develop posting automation to social. https://ifttt.com/

My WordPress blog articles have helped me to rank #1 for many long-tail keywords.  For this new Google 3-pack, I find that I am in the 3-pack for most of my keywords, but not all. I am still appearing in the organic SERP near the top.

From reading an article on Moz on this subject, I think I need to focus on getting customer reviews and social media engagement.  I notice some of my competitors in the 3-pack are not blogging but they have more customer reviews and more active social media.
