Bible study from the past. Gentleman studying in room.

Man studying Bible long time ago.

I found this picture at one of the thrift stores and I always wonder how families can throw away pictures of family.  And now that pictures are so easy to do on cell phones you'd think we would appreciate the old ones like this.

Try magnifying parts of the picture and it becomes very interesting.  I wanted to see what the things on the mantle were because they look like shadow boxes but I could not tell what the contents were.  The cord to the lamp must be from some overhead light.  Or maybe it connects to the cell phone lying there. (Oops!  Lost my train of thought there for a moment!)

The chairs suggest that this may be a class room and the chalkboard definitely has a Bible lesson and that has to be a Bible that he is studying.  If any Searcy Sleuths can tell us more about this picture, please do so.  We are listening and learning.

By-the-way, the back of the picture has a written name, Lynn Whitelaw.  Perhaps someone knows that name from history.

Don will have every item in the picture "blown up" so we can see, and everything identified by noon.

Never heard of any Whitelaw in Searcy. None in my phone book.

I love older photos Barbara.  Sadly, they have gone the way that newspapers, magazines and even books have gone.

This is about the best I can do without getting fat pixels.

As far as ID, there's an assortment of vases and framed pictures but the dodads

are hard to figure out.

Yes, Don, I got about that far and also could not tell what the items were.

Rosemarie, you are right.  But I am old fashioned.  I still take the newspapers, magazines and buy some books.

I'm trying to guess which decade that photo may have been taken.  Perhaps around 1910 to 1920 or so.

I find it sad that the gentleman's family, doesn't have this picture too.

Myrl, I think we have found info about the man's family and perhaps the picture can be returned to them.  I think your time frame is correct.

Winston, thanks for the comment.

Gita, thanks.

This photo was found in the thrift shop along with some photos of my parents' wedding in 1940. J. D. Bales married Mary Smart on July 2nd in Toronto, Canada. One of mother's bridesmaids was Margaret Whitelaw who never married and who just died this spring at 97. Her brother was Lyn Whitelaw, pictured in the photo in question. He is also deceased. I discovered this connection when Barbara informed me of the name on the back of the picture and I called a Canadian friend who ferreted out the rest of the story!

Mary Ethel, thanks for finding out who this gentleman was.  I am going to copy and paste your answer onto facebook.  Then I want to show the picture of your parent's wedding in a blog before returning all these historic photos to your family.

Hi Barbara,
I'm trying to find out if the gentleman has any family still living so that we can get the photo back to those with whom it belongs!

I have finally been able to locate Lynn Whitelaw's family by contacting the funeral home where his sister Margaret Whitelaw was recently waked. They sent my contact info to the family and one of his descendants e-mailed me with her address so that I can get the photo back into the hands with which it belongs! Yeah for e-mail!
