Sunday, August 9, 2015...

Final preparations are almost complete for our departure August 11th. The Minkler Expedition, aka  Seniors of Discovery Expedition 2015 will be taking to the great I-90 eastbound across country at 6:00 am sharp Tuesday morning. Destination Branson, Missouri.

It’s been a busy day. I completed my final training this morning with Captain Keith. This was my 4th and final exercise at the helm of our 1998 Dodge diesel 3/4 ton pickup, 5 speed manual with Prairie Schooner attached, up and down freeways and winding side roads to South Hill Puyallup and back to Kent.

I think I did okay, but caught myself using the brakes a little too much a few times instead of gearing down and using engine compression. Yet, I’m confident I can do this. It’s a little over a 2,000 mile trek to Missouri so I’ll have ample opportunity to sharpen my skills along the way.

As a mate of this crew I’m also responsible for navigation. Captain Keith is an old school adventurer, so he doesn’t use technology quite the way I do. I’m fully armed with my trusty iPhone 6+ and iPad and will be looking ahead down the road with able apps for traffic, closures, construction, forest fires and accidents.

And... I have my Yelp, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and 3 blogs to find good stops, communicate to the world at large, and/or fire off a cry for help if need be.

Well I better let you go now and get back to it... There’s plenty of provisioning to accomplish before bedtime and time's a wastin.

I'm feeling this is kinda like the John Candy movie, Wagons East. And other stories are coming to mind suddenly like Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Henry Miller, The Air Conditioned Nightmare, Travels with Charley, John Steinbeck, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig, and The Lost Continent, Bill Bryson...

Stay tuned... The story is just about to begin...

Sounds like a fun trip Rene, too bad you are jumping off I90 before you make it to Wisconsin.

You will have a blast!!! I have travelled about 6k miles thus far this summer. Road construction is everywhere. It is only a reduction in speed - no stoppage. The reduction was from 70-80 MPH to 55. So much beautiful country out there. Travel safely on this wonderful adventure!!

Hi Liz! So glad you checked in here and thanks! Yes, I'm seeing a lot of road construction symbols on my Google Maps along the route! I'm happy to hear from that its just a minor slow down! Thanks!

Hi Brian England ... Thanks... Longest drive I've done before this was from El Cajon in Southern California to Renton... that one was about 1,250 miles.

Rene- how exciting!!!!  Larry and I just returned from a road trip from Delray Beach, west to Clinton, Iowa, then back down to Lenexa KS.

May I recommend 1. a real road atlas

                                   2. WAZE- app.  It can give you real-time information on accidents, road closures, etc.  If it's open, it will tell you if there are police ahead, or debris in the road. etc.

                                   3. Places Around (also on the iPhone)

Safe trip!!!

René - I would like to do something like that soon.  I have always wanted to travel by land accross the country.  My choice would be along the old Route 66.

Hi Kathy Streib ... one of the issues I ran into on the road was commenting on AR from my iPhone or iPad... Thought they went through, but none are there. So, my apologize, I don't normally leave comments unattended to if I can help it. Thanks for comment and sharing WAZE and Places Around... I used them both!

Hi Grant Schneider ... ditto above to Kathy... It was a great trip and (not sure I'd do it this way again) I had a blast... I agree, Route 66. My brother is restoring a 57 Chevy Nomad. We're planning a Route 66 trip when it's done... Probably summer 2017...

Hi Lou Ludwig ... It was a great trip and again, ditto comments to Kathy above. Great adventure, several unforseen technical glitches and having time issues, but all in all a total success...
