So you have bought your home – now you need to insure it! Do not make the mistake of forgoing this cost. Home insurance is an absolute must in the event something happens to your property. Here are some tips for making sure you get the right coverage at the right price.

What Do You Need? If you are insuring a large property or a lot of items on that property, make sure you get enough coverage on your insurance plan. A home insurance representative will help guide you through a process of determining precisely what you need by asking you specific questions about your home and valuable personal belongings.

Know Your Area. Are you in a flood zone? On an earthquake fault line? Often times the area of your home can affect the type or amount of insurance you need to fully cover your property. This should come up when you are buying the home but be sure to know all the facts when researching your home insurance options.

Create Detailed Inventory. Having a list of your property and their worth can help you determine what needs replacement in case of a burglary. Knowing what you own can also help you pick a better insurance policy that will insure all of your items and valuables.

Research Thoroughly. Many insurance companies charge different amounts for different coverage and services. Ask for a quote before committing to a plan. Also, consider bundling your home insurance with your car or other insured property for a discount with the company you already utilize. Often times discounts or perks are given to customers who have proven to be dedicated clients and continuously bring them business.

Insuring your home is an incredibly important step. Take the necessary precautions when securing the safety of your finances and your property in the future. Home insurance protects you and your property from damage or theft so take the necessary measures to put the best policy in place

Tim - Most lenders will not allow you to buy a home unless you have already shown that you have insurance in place, so the research needs to be done in advance - unless you are paying cash.

Hi Troy, you are absolutely correct. A homeowners policy has to be in place prior to funding. Thanks for the input!
