Jeff- there is so much that you can forget when doing a move and especially if it is through a company. I know. I have been there. I wish I had your information back then.

Jeff your moving check list is fantastic. We have so many people going through this right now and being prepared in advance and knowing the right questions to ask is critical. One other thing I tell my long distance folks is let go of the stuff you don't want anymore. No sense in moving it across country only to let it go on the other end. So many say afterwards - I thought I got rid of a lot of stuff but we discovered we could have let other a lot of other stuff go as well as we'll never use it.

Well I have as well, with some pretty interesting experiences. If you have never had a major move it can be pretty daunting. Thanks for the compliment

My wife and I had relo packages for 3 of our 4 MAJOR moves and they are all different. And employers are being more cautious about what they cover and how much. I find buyers are often pretty surprise at how much it can cost to move a house full of stuff hundreds, or thousands, of miles. International is yet another whole thing
Thanks for the nice compliment!

Jeff, I've moved a ton of times as well, including overseas. I've learned to have a detailed schedule of all items with values (including supporting receipts) as it's what you need if you ever have a large claim (and I have had those). I also learned to ask for pairs and sets insurance (it's cheap but they never offer it it). So if you have a pair or set of something that can't be replaced, if one of the items breaks or disappears they pay to replace the pair or set. Has that ever saved my bacon a few times.

Thanks for the nice compliment.
I suggest that to people who are moving and I think it's good advice. Heavy furniture and lots of books you don't want adds to the weight and move cost. So many people just keep moving things and not getting rid of what they no longer want - I have to say I have done some of that, too!
Have a great weekend!

Thanks for mentioning pairs and sets insurance - I had forgotten about that. The whole thing gets pretty complicated as far as insurance goes. Even though movers, at least the ones I have used, are pretty careful, damage does happen no matter how carefully packed things might be.

Some great points! I was moved 4 times for work across country. I learned on my 1st one a key lesson. Put all your remotes in a bag you take with you. Becuase if they lose the box you put them in you are screwed. LOL learned that the hard way... :-)

Love your list. I've never moved far and have always done it myself, but I won't be able to do it again. Too old, too tired. And one of the worst moves I ever helped with was when my parents moved 50 feet. I should write a post about that.

Well that is excellent advice. Sorta like flying - I have had so many bags delayed or lost that I always take my chargers/cords, etc. with me on the plane.
Thanks for your comments - have a terrific weekend!

Moving is TOUGH, even if it's a short distance. I have moved myself and also had movers. It's hard no matter who you are working with and how planful you area. Talk about stress!
Yeah, let's hear that post so others can learn!

Good advice Jeff. I have been through a few of these and your info is a MUST read for anyone going through or about to go through a move!
