How SWEET It Is!

How Sweet It Is . . .

As Jackie Gleason would say "How SWEET it is" and then he'd do his happy shuffle.

Well, I learned something this week from my son, Carlson, and I'm NOT happy!

SUGAR is SWEET . . . yes it is!

And sugar is everywhere in our food!

I'm not going on a diet, per se.

I am, however, going to be watching the sugar content on the label.

Labeling is important.

If I want to know what's being used in the food I'm not only buying, but putting in my mouth, I think I have the right to know HOW SWEET IT IS!

The daily recommended adult intake of sugar is 25 grams for a woman.  That's about 6 teaspoons per day.  I think that's a lot!

I was SHOCKED to read the labels on the food products I have in my house.

29 grams of sugar in the Thai salad I bought at Trader Joes . . .

YIKES!

33 grams of sugar in my organic yogurt!

YIKES!

The "reasoning" behind the labels NOT putting the recommended daily amount as a percentage is because it's not considered a nutrient.

I think it's more along the lines of:

... The Sugar Lobby doesn't want consumers to know that 44 grams of Sugar in the soda product is 176% MORE than the daily amount.

So -- be careful with SUGAR consumption.

Carbs have sugar.  The sugar noted on the label is the ADDED sugar!

Read the labels . . . stay healthy!

HINT: Try to get sweetened items with cane sugar, which is a little better than high-fructose corn syrup!

There are some good things to be learned on those labels, but I noticed that the print is getting smaller

There is sugar in everything. Even some food items that claim they are low or no sugar still have tons of sugar in them. I'm not sure how they get away with that.

I likely consumer a lot of sugar, but for the most part is what occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables, I do not add sugar in much I cook.  However my southern weakness is sweet tea.  It's not as sweet as my grandmother's was, but I don't do artificial sweetners.

Ed Silva - LOL very true!

Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert  - I am eating more and more organic fruit and vegetables.  I'm making my own soups, salad dressings, spaghetti sauces.  I drink water.  It has occured to me that my dog Molly ONLY drinks water.  Our bodies aren't designed to process all the processed foods.  Sugars turn to fat.  Butylated HydroxyAnisole turns to cancer.

Carla, the crap we eat is killing us. Labeling is deceptive at best. Most of the so called healthy stuff is still crap.

Kathleen Daniels -- Every manufacturer wants to sell their crap.  So they load it up with sugar so we come back for more.  Sugar is extremely addicting.  People don't realize that.  I hadn't given it much thought, until Carlson enlightened me.  I am pulling back . . . way BACK!!

Well, I didn't really want to know this...however, I just looked on my can of Pepsi and it is 42 grams of sugar.  This is my second one today. YIKES!

And how many servings?  It can be two, depending on the ounces.  Sugar is highly addictive and causes a lot of health problems.  Diabetes isn't called "the sugars" for nothing!  Be careful Evelyn Johnston

I don't know what is more disturbing, your post Carla or Evelyn's comment about the 42 grams of sugar in her pop!  Good grief!

I'm addicted to Nutella and I'm sorry, I just can't look at that label!

Francine Viola there are 22 grams in 2 tbsp.

Since the 2 tbsp equals a total of 37 grams, it makes sense the first, and main ingredient, is SUGAR!

And if you gave your kid the "tasty yet balanced" breakfast suggested, that 8 oz. of orange juice would add another 21 grams of sugar . . . and that's just BREAKFAST!
