How Sweet It Is . . .
As Jackie Gleason would say "How SWEET it is" and then he'd do his happy shuffle.
Well, I learned something this week from my son, Carlson, and I'm NOT happy!
SUGAR is SWEET . . . yes it is!
And sugar is everywhere in our food!
I'm not going on a diet, per se.
I am, however, going to be watching the sugar content on the label.
Labeling is important.
If I want to know what's being used in the food I'm not only buying, but putting in my mouth, I think I have the right to know HOW SWEET IT IS!
The daily recommended adult intake of sugar is 25 grams for a woman. That's about 6 teaspoons per day. I think that's a lot!
I was SHOCKED to read the labels on the food products I have in my house.
29 grams of sugar in the Thai salad I bought at Trader Joes . . .
YIKES!
33 grams of sugar in my organic yogurt!
YIKES!
The "reasoning" behind the labels NOT putting the recommended daily amount as a percentage is because it's not considered a nutrient.
I think it's more along the lines of:
... The Sugar Lobby doesn't want consumers to know that 44 grams of Sugar in the soda product is 176% MORE than the daily amount.
So -- be careful with SUGAR consumption.
Carbs have sugar. The sugar noted on the label is the ADDED sugar!
Read the labels . . . stay healthy!
HINT: Try to get sweetened items with cane sugar, which is a little better than high-fructose corn syrup!
