For the sake of imagination let's imagine that we all live in a large gated community called America. The community has gates on the streets leading in. Everyone who pays the HOA dues (taxes) gets the benefits of a pool, weight room, secure environment, and club house. Our children play in the park, swim in the pool, and use the fitness room at their leisure in exchange for our dues. Our invited friends enjoys these perks as well.
Why would anyone living in this community want the front gates to be insecure, left open, and outsiders who do not live in the community, do not pay dues, and do not have an investment in the community freely come in and use the amenities? Afterall, your children and mine are playing in the streets together.
It feels good to know who lives in this community. It's called security and it has a price.
I still don't get this part. I'm a great grandchild of an immigrant as my great grandfather came in through Ellis Island in the 1870's from Ireland. He registered, waited, took the boat and eventually became an American citizen like everyone else. He, like most Irish immigrants during that time frame, worked for pennies and we're scorned for it. It was well known and often mentioned that the Irish would work for less than the liberated slaves in the U.S. at that time in history.
Yet, right now some of our leaders are actually attempting to not only collect your H.O.A. dues, but allow others who have no right to your amenities to come in and crowd the pool. They may also play alongside your children and even start throwing parties every weekend at the clubhouse enjoying your reserved amenities.
I know that anyone of us in these circumstances would expect the police would be called and the trespassers removed. Afterall, they are utilizing your amenities without paying for them. How could anyone be happy with that? I still havent heard a cogent argument. What I have heard is that we feel sorry for the folks who would flee their own communities and try to live in ours. Well, so do I. But still, an HOA has rules to govern the community for the good of the residents. We had a revolution here as well as a civil war and we paid for what we have with much blood sweat and tears. Now we are supposed to give it away free to those who only qualify by sneaking through the fence? Why, if you were a resident of this gated community and provided access to strangers you felt sorry for you would be warned to STOP and upon refusal, likely sued and/or removed yourself. It wouldn't last one week here in a SW Florida gated community. Not one single week.
People wonder why "Teflon Don" has such a mounting lead. He's a real estate developer. He knows the importance of a strong H.O.A..
