Colorado’s Majestic Lure of Gardening & Living in the Denver Foothills

Colorado’s natural beauty has been the lure for many tourist which have come to call this place home after visiting.  Thus goes the saying on many front entrances of residential homes  and bumper stickers  “  Not A Native, But I Got Here As Fast As I Could”.

Colorado’s breath taking mountain views, abundance sunshine, low humidity and fluctuating temperatures, breathtaking mountain views along with the diversity of something for everyone. No wonder we are seeing low inventory and rising real estate values. Inspiring many to make the move to Colorado.   In fact, our very own Pikes Peak was the inspiration for “America the Beautiful”.

The name Colorado comes from the Spanish words “color rogue” meaning color red, referring to our dominant red soils.  The red color prominently noticed around the foothills area is due to high amounts of iron in the soil.  Just to name a few popular places that beautifully display is our Red Rocks  the amphitheater in Morrison,  Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs and the villages in Mesa Verde.  Gardeners who can manipulate the soil and microclimate will be amply rewarded.

Winter Sunlight, cool crisp nights and warm days of summer gardeners grow some of the most brilliant flowers in the nation.  The high light intensity produces strong long stemmed plants and flowers with extra sparkle.  These same climatic conditions enable the home gardener to produce excellent potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower as well as other cooler vegetables.  Denver Botanical Gardens shows a variety of our local native plants in all their splendor.

A few challenges to Newcomers are selecting native plants that tolerate our elevations and deer resistant are key to living in the foothills.  It's a great to connect with the locals at one of the Community Gardens at Buchanan Park, or join the local garden club,  Evergreen Garden Club & Moonlight Garden Club for little support to feel right at home.
