Wildfire Woes In Washington - " Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires."

Gold Rush Fire in Skamania County

It's been a brutal summer for wildfires in Washington State. Smoke hangs in the air today in our Camas neighborhood, a reminder of the Gold Rush fire burning near Dougan Falls. Tough and steep terrain is making it difficult for the fire crews to get it fully contained. Gusty east winds are blowing through the Gorge and our thoughts are for the safety of the firefighters who have been on the lines since last Monday.

Dougan Falls is a popular spot for recreation in the summer, and our hot weather has increased the number of people looking for cool-water fun. However, we're being asked to please stay away and let the crews do their job. Sadly, fire officials believe the fire was human caused. It's a good reminder that prevention is critical. In the words of that famous bear, "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires."

Hello Debb,  I am getting so upset over all these fires out west, at least our state is fire free this year.

Today is the first in many that we have seen actual blue sky above us, and sun that looked like sun rather than a hot ember in the sky. Last night's wind cleared out the layer of smoke blowing in from both east and west of us. The Tower fire in Washington is burning close to the Idaho line, so some in our community have been put on alert that they may need to evacuate.

Yesterday when I looked out my office window toward the mountain on the other side of the meadow, I couldn't see trees - only a wall of dirty gray. As for the air, most of us who don't have respiratory problems do have headaches and/or runny noses.

It's a scary summer - we're all praying for rain.

We have been so lucky this summer. We usually have some pretty bad wildfires almost every year here but this year has been ok. I'm so sorry for your area being burned!

It's one thing for a forest to burn because it's rejuvinating itself but I hate to hear when people start the fire!

Great picture and reminder. When things are dry it does not take much to start a fire.

Debb Janes I have been following the fires.  I just heard that 335,000+ square miles have been affected.  My heart goes out to everyone. I cannot begin to imagine what a difficult time this is for residents, firefighters and animals. May the winds subside and rain come your way.  Take care.

OH, Debb, but for the grace of God...I am always most embarrassed at being a human when those of us who ought to know better do such stupid things to our precious world. I am ashamed. The smoky winds whisked their way to Fishhawk Lake on Saturday. There was a fire between Mist and Clatskanie, not us, but somehow the news stations flashed a photo of Fishhawk Lake, so we were mistakenly included. I got a call today from a prospective buyer all worried, who alerted me to this--obviously it was misinformation, but alas we will be included.

Lives lost, wild and human.

This has been such a brutal year for wildfires in the Western states.  It is vitally important that folks be extra cautious to not contribute to more than we already have.

While Smoky says, "Only you can prevent forest fires," we need a little help from the heavens to refrain sending more lightening strikes.

Hey thanks for the all support and comments. And yes, lightening strikes also cause a number of fires, but imagine the frustration of firefighters when an completely "preventable" fire takes them off the other lines they are working during a summer such as this one.

debb, What a shame in so many ways. I believe most of these wildfires are caused by careless or people who have no common sense. I hope the firefighters get these fires under control. We all know it is a serious problem right now.
