rialto Searcy AR old theater 1963 group

Old yearbooks have become pictures of the past and some of the pictures are important.  Right now in Searcy AR a group has formed to try to "Save the Rialto."  The Rialto is an old movie theater that has been on the same block corner for years and years.  It is still in operation and anyone who lives or lived in Searcy loved going there.  Almost every year book had a picture of the Rialto in the advertisement section.

This one is from the 1963 yearbook and has a large crowd in front.  Perhaps the Searcy Sleuths can recognize and identify some of them.  Girls were still wearing bobby socks it seems and I'll bet the guy on the left took a lot of teasing about his pose.  He may have inspired Michael Jackson.

P. S.  Looking a little more closely, you discover that the hand is actually the girl's hand!!  Both would have been teased.

IMHO, the only one that counts is K.K. King, the mainstay of the Rialto.

9 years is too long since I graduated from SHS. If any of those are seniors at

SHS, they would have been in the 3rd grade when I was a senior.

The Rialto is an institution in Searcy. How many dating couples from Harding College / University have walked down to the Rialto for a movie date. I vote to save it.

Don, I knew you'd give me some history.  K K King deserves a day of celebration.

David, so do I.  Throw in a few dollars to help save it!

Ronald, I agree this picture almost looks like the 50's when bobby socks were in.

That is a funny optical illusion!  I was five in '63, but how I miss that era.

I could probably name everyone in the picture, if you are interested. This was the year I graduated from SHS. We had a great class, 1963. Nancy Dacus Thompson

Carla, consider the comfort of those penny loafers vs the elevated platform shoes worn today!

Nancy, I was so surprised that I knew so many of the folks in the yearbook, but not in this picture.  The picture was small and did not scan well.  The Save the Rialto group would probably like the names so jot them all down while you remember them.  Scan them to me also!  Thanks.

I had my first date at the Rialto Theater in about 1957--and the picture accurately depicts how we would be dressed when I graduated from Harding Academy in 1961! The Rialto is a rare piece of history and should certainly be saved!
