Now a days, everyone wants the freshest, the organic and the home grown. Well here in Downtown Austin, we have quite an option to choose from when it comes to farm fresh, organic produce and homemade goods.
The Sustainable Food Center (SFC) Farmers Market opened in 2003 and is a true asset to the Downtown community. It is open rain or shine, year-round on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at scenic Republic Square Park, 422 Guadalupe Street. Located adjacent to the new, urbane Federal Courthouse Plaza, Republic Square is one of three remaining Downtown Historical Squares.
You’ll find a number of purveyors showcasing farmer’s produce, from fruits and vegetables to dairy, meats and even fresh honey. The variety of goods increases and changes each week throughout the seasons. Plus, there are a select number of local crafters at the market who provide unique goods for customers to enjoy such as fresh baked goods, homemade noodles and homemade soaps, detox salts plus unique handmade clothing, hats and jewelry. A weekly outing for many of the local residents, this farmers market invites them to get there early for the best selection, as some items are limited in quantities!
For your enjoyment, there is a cafe under Republic Square’s centerpiece, the Auction Oaks, the beautiful 300 year old trees. Also, they provide free, weekly live entertainment and plenty of room for you to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of Downtown Austin.
Knowing where your food comes from and sharing in the tradition of shopping local is a great family value to have, so come and visit your local SFC Downtown Farmers Market. Supporting these local vendors is important, to both the economic and environmental structures, ensuring the future of farming in our area.
