Back to School in Katy
Well, it's the first day of school here in the Katy and Houston, Texas area. And that's always exciting. I don't have any kids in my house, but I must admit that I get excited seeing the kids in the neighborhood head off to school at the beginning of the year. Wearing their new backpacks with fresh faces and huddled in groups chatting and laughing while waiting for their school bus, they are just as cute as can be.
Memories of Days Gone By
It reminds me of when I was in school. We were the Willis Wildkats and our colors were purple and white. My mom would take us to the local department store where we would pick out our ensembles to wear for the new year. No uniforms back then. It was always great fun shopping for new outfits. And when we were really young it meant picking out a new lunch box for the year. I remember having an Osmonds lunch box back in the early 70's. I think my sister had the Partridge Family lunch box. And of course there was the Barbie lunch box in the late 60's. New crayon sets and No. 2 pencils sharp and ready to go. And off we went.
When I was in the first grade (we were such a small school that we didn't have Kindergarten), my dad walked me to my first class. He was also the principal of the elementary school so it was comforting to know he was just down the hall.
In high school there was marching band practice for first period and having natural curly hair made for an unruly mess most of the first semester. But it was great fun and lots of memories were made.
Wish Them Well
So let's wish our students well this first day of school. And be mindful of the school zones while driving. Here's hoping this is a great year filled with challenges, success, and good memories that will last a lifetime. And go Katy Tigers!
