Dalmatians aren't born with Spots and Neither are You

Greetings,

I found this wonderful article online on Active Rain about how Dalmation puppies are not born with their spots, they get them as they grow and mature. Isn't this a lot like we are?  We aren't made to be great, we have to put in time and effort and then we become who we are by time, education, influences, life experiences and more.

Did you know that Dalmatians are not born with their signature spots? They get their spots as they grow and mature. Each dalmatian puppy gets their spots at their own pace as nature intended. Their patterns are unique. Some have more spots than others yet their health and wellness is not dependent upon the markings, whether they be in abundance or sparse.

Generally speaking, successful entrepreneurs and business owners are much like the dalmatian. They come in to the world of commerce like the many others that came before them. Their dreams and ideas were cultivated in the womb of thought and preparation before thought gave birth to action.

Every professional grows and matures at their own pace. Some walk quicker than the rest of the litter while others stumble as they learn how to navigate the ground below them. There are those who are naturally gifted with the confidence and ability to venture out from the herd the first chance they get. Meanwhile, the not so self-assured take a little more time to wander from safety.

Everyone has a different background and upbringing. Our parents, friends, neighborhoods, and schools weave in to us our social and professional DNA. We all have our own roads we've traveled. Some have experienced a more winding and bumpy road than the rest. There are those who had college and trust funds set up for them by parents or grandparents. If you were lucky enough to be born in to an affluent part of the Country you may have had a better chance at internships, scholarships, or business opportunities.

But just because you developed more spots than others early on doesn't guarantee you'll be first pick of the litter when it comes down to finding your home in the business world. There's a lot to be said about that scrappy, rambunctious, go-getter who may not have the best markings but they are running circles around the rest of the group.

Dalmatians can't do math(as far as I know). They can't count how many spots each of them have and even if they could I doubt they would care. There is no pecking order or hierarchy when it comes to spots on dogs. The different personalities is what sets them apart. If you stand back and watch puppies play you can tell who is dominant, shy, playful, reserved, friendly, or aggressive. It has nothing to do with the skin that they're in.

So as a business professional are you worried about the spots on others? Do you look at their coat and yours to see if you measure up? What if your competition was spawned by a top level pedigree while you came from two mangy mutts? I'm suggesting to you that it doesn't matter one bit where you came from or how many spots you have versus others. Be the professional you were born to be.

There is one exception to the spotted rule of dalmatians. On occasion there is a puppy born with one solitary spot which can be located anywhere on their bodies. They call it a "patch". You could look at these special select puppies and say they are born with a decided advantage to their counterparts. After all they got a jump start on the competition and they didn't do anything to earn or achieve it.

The "patch" dalmatian puppies are a perfect example to show us that the beginning does not dictate the ending. The initial and special patch is in no way an indicator of total overall spot production. Every other puppy in the litter may end up with more spots than the one who appeared to have a jump start on the rest.

But what if someone wasn't happy with their spot count? What if they decided to paint a few fake ones on themselves thinking others would see the plethora of markings and surely give them the attention they aren't getting currently? The problem with fake spots is that they fade, wash away, and disappear over time. You'll also find yourself constantly reapplying and touching up those spots that were never supposed to be there which will leave you exhausted.

Time, maturity, productivity and personality is what will set you apart. You might not have started out with a perceived advantage and you may not end up with the most spots on your coat but not everyone is looking for those distinctions. You were born to be you. Don't worry about how many spots you have versus others. Just go out there and play. Roll around in the grass, chase some cats, and bark at passing cars. Over time, you'll end up with the exact amount of spots you were always meant to have.
