Now is a great time to visit Brookside Gardens.

I love butterflies.

I have a huge out of control butterfly bush in front of my house that is filled in August and September with butterflies that make me smile whenever I look out the window. So, given my love of butterflies, I was delighted to read that Brookside Gardens is celebrating the return of its premier Wings of Fancy Live Butterfly and Caterpillar Exhibit. Their seasonal display features hundreds of live butterflies from all over the world. This is a wonderful chance to get an up close experience of these brilliant butterflies from North America, Costa Rica, Africa and Asia in a natural setting of colorful flowers. This is the chance to learn about how butterflies evolve from caterpillars, the important role butterflies play in having healthy ecosystems, and how to invite these beautiful insects into our own gardens.

If you love butterflies like I do, this will be another reason to want to live in Montgomery County Maryland! The Brookside Gardens is in Wheaton, just off Randolph Road.

To Buy Tickets: Tickets may be bought at the Visitors Center or the Conservatory gift shops. Tickets are good for re-entry to the exhibit throughout the day of purchase. Tickets must be purchased by 4 pm for that day’s entry. Frequent Visitor Passes also available for use throughout the duration of the Exhibit.

Parking: Parking is available at the Conservatory.

Accessibility: The Exhibit is wheelchair accessible.

Peak Times: Many school groups visit the Exhibit in September – October, typically on weekdays between 10 am and 1 pm. Individuals may prefer to visit the exhibit after 1 p.m. to avoid crowds and for easier access to parking in the Conservatory parking lot. Early morning hours is another way to avoid crowds and enjoy the butterflies when the temperatures in the Exhibit are more comfortable.

Physical Conditions: The Exhibit is located inside a greenhouse, which is usually ten degrees warmer than the outside temperature and more humid. Visiting the butterfly exhibit and seeing the gardens requires a fair amount of walking.Visitors should bring water during hot weather to drink regularly.

Extreme Heat Closures: Brookside Gardens follows the advisory from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. If there is extreme weather or heat, Brookside Gardens will close the exhibit for the safety of visitors, volunteers and staff.

Weather Closures: The Exhibit may close during the following National Weather Service conditions: Heat Advisory, Excessive Heat Warning, Code Red or Purple Air Quality Alert. The exhibit may also close at other times during severe thunderstorms or other emergencies.

As an FYI - For people like me who love gardening with plants that attract butterflies, the Gardens provides an educational brochure, "Gardening for Butterflies." This brochure has lots of tips for choosing the best plants to invite into your garden butterflies in all stages of the life cycle.  The Butterfly Conservatory even has these garden ideas on display in the new Monarch Wayside Garden!

If this sounds like a great way to spend a Friday afternoon or a long weekend, you should conider moving to Montgomery County.  Please give the Lise Howe Group a call to find out all about home opportunities in Montgomery County close to this wonderful nature center.
