Corporate relocations (not an employee...the WHOLE COMPANY) get all kinds of people excited....self included! And the buzz around General Electric's possible move to Atlanta is no different!
Could General Electric Land At Assembly Doraville?
Assembly Doraville is ripe for a corporate relocation like General Electric. In fact, I heard from a good source that if the Assembly site had been further along, Mercedes Benz would have given it strong consideration for it's move to Atlanta. (They instead selected a piece of land in Sandy Springs where a historic mansion was razed.)
But today, another very worth site entered the hunt to land the General Electric campus, should they select Atlanta. (I just wrote about a potential site at Atlantic Station in Midtown earlier this week. CLICK HERE!
Assembly Doraville, according to the proposal released by Integral Group (the developer) and Cushman & Wakefield (real estate broker), would be an ideal site. "While Atlantic Station is an already-formed community, and Three Alliance has the limits of any office building, GE gets a completely clean canvas to work with at Assembly,” the real estate services giant said in a statement. “There is almost no limit to what the imaginations at GE can do with the space allotted.”
The renderings below give a clear idea of what Integral Group Chairman and CEO Egbert Perry means when he calls Assembly a city within a city. The project looks like, and very easily could be a dense, walkable, urban environment along the Atlanta Perimeter. You can see I-285 along the top of the renderings, and in two of them, the Doraville MARTA station is evidenced in the bottom right hand corner.
For years, the former site of the General Motors plant in Doraville has stood as the Atlanta region’s best candidate to become a best-in-class, sustainable, transit-connected urban node and live-work-play community inside the Perimeter,” Integral said in a statement. “Today, another iconic American company, General Electric, has an opportunity to be an important catalyst for the 145-acre Assembly project.”
In this first rendering, you see three buildings fronting I-285 that have a GE logo on them. The second rendering has some notes to give you another perspective.
On the left hand side, I've noted the section that was recently sold to Asbury Automotive and will be the Nissan and Infiniti dealerships. Between the two high-rise buildings, I've indicated where I-285 is. On the bottom right, I've noted the Transit Park. This is the first park you would encounter once you leave the Doraville MARTA station, and it is noted with an arrow. Additionally, I've noted Park Avenue, which is to extend from BuHi (Buford Highway) and go UNDER the MARTA station and CSX railroad tracks and into Assembly.
Lastly, the drawing is taken from an original presentation by the developer. I've "circled" the area that is shown in the two renderings above, again marking where the Asbury dealerships will be. You see I-285 to the right, and the Doraville MARTA station is actually BELOW the words. Where I made a second circle is the park you see on the left in BOTH of the renderings above. I've also noted the location of Third Rail Studios, which is scheduled to break ground in September.
Indeed, this could be really exciting not only for Assembly, but the entire area. We will be keep in a close watch on this one!
