September is right around the corner, which means the approach of an increasingly popular event in one of Colorado’s most desirable suburban communities: HRCA’s annual Oktoberfest and 5K in Highlands Ranch.
On Saturday, September 19th, HRCA brings the tastes, sights, and sounds of Germany to Highlands Ranch. Residents and visitors alike can don their lederhosen or dirndls and join in a 5K race, which will begin at 9:30am and be followed with a post-race party. An entertaining tradition is the Chug & Dash after the race, to see who can drink a beer and run the fastest for 100 yards to the finish line.
At noon the family-friendly Oktoberfest Celebration will commence, with authentic German food, music, live entertainment, dancing, and, of course, a variety of beer and other beverages. Children will enjoy magic tricks, balloons, games, and other entertainment including, and all ages will appreciate another unique part of this event: the Dachshund Races at 3:00pm. It’s a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon, enjoying bratwurst and pretzels with live music, and when the band plays a catchy polka it will be nearly impossible not to join in the fun!
The festival will take place in Highlands Ranch Town Center (9352 Dorchester Street, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129) and, weather permitting, the festivities will wrap up with a firework display at around approximately 8:30pm. Parking, entry to the festival, and live entertainment are completely free!
HRCA, the homeowners association for Highlands Ranch, is the organizer of the event, and the entity behind the huge variety of cultural and community events in the area. In addition to running the four state-of-the-art recreation centers and dozens of parks, the HRCA’s upcoming events include Summer’s Sunset Concert, Culture on the Green, Highlands Ranch Days at the famous Mansion, and the Farmers’ & Street Market held weekly on Sundays.
With all of the events and amenities to be found in Highlands Ranch, it’s no small wonder that it is in very high demand in the housing market; NerdWallet and Business Week have both recognized it as one of the best places to raise families in Colorado, and Forbes listed it as one of the top places to move in the nation. But none of these accolades are surprising to the residents of Highlands Ranch; those who live here, myself included, know that it’s the people in the community itself that make Highlands Ranch such a great place to live!
