I don’t know about where you live, but over here in Silicon Valley (California) we are experiencing a severe water drought. Most everyone here is doing their part to help conserve water by having low flow toilets installed in their homes, placing empty buckets to recycle the excess water while taking a shower, washing full loads of laundry instead of a bunch of small loads, not leaving the water running while brushing teeth or washing dishes, etc. One great water saver is by sparingly watering our lawns and outside shrubbery. On practically every block of houses you will see signs posted saying “Brown is the new Green”. Most lawns are now a yellowish-brownish-green and are totally acceptable; as a matter of fact if one see’s a green lawn then we all know that someone is not following the rules!
Clever marketing, I think here in Las Vegas they stopped putting in real grass because of water. I am always a fan of natural landscaping that can survive the area without much extra then what natures provides.
That is perhaps why I will live in the Midwest instead of Las Vegas long term, I like my green trees & grass.

Sophia Lin, You guys are really taking a beating in that drought and I admire those of you who are not watering the lawn.

Stefan Winter - I too like my grass & trees green, but I'll just have to grin and bear it til this drought is over ;)
Sybil Campbell - The lawns certainly don't look pretty, but if everyones on board it's not so bad ![]()

Yes it is the new green, and it is wise to modify the landscaping to reflect a more xeric climate.

We are expecting a lot of rain this weekend. I am sorry about the drought in your area.
The grass is brown in our area even though we are having very rainy weather in the east.
Sophia,
I am hoping you guys have a rainy fall and I try to incorporate some of those avenues you guys do to save water as it is a precious commodity!
I wish I could transport some of our excess rain over to people who need it!
