Walking Shoes and Real Estate

Walking Shoes and Real Estate

Yesterday afternoon I was out with my client looking at the progress of her new construction.   It's coming along and I can't wait to see her finished home!

After we spent about an hour with the contractor, we made plans to go out to lunch, and after lunch we went to look for a new pair of walking shoes.

Several months ago, my client had gone to a walking clinic.

It was a "how to" on walking!  Can you imagine that?  How to WALK!?!  It's a 12 week course conducted each Tuesday.

ActiveSalem/Gallagher's in Salem

She couldn't tell me everything she learned from attending the walking clinic, but did mention the benefits of having a good shoe!

I walk in and see the shoes lined up against the wall on display and I'm ONLY focused on one thing:

THE PRICE

The owner of the store, asks me "What are you looking for?"  I tell him "I'd like a good walking shoe."

And he says, "A good walking shoe . . . is really a good running shoe," and I immediately suspect he's trying to hustle me in to a higher price range!

Then he says, "What size shoe do you wear?" and I reply, "I'm a size 7."

He says, "Well, you'll have to look at an 8 or 8 1/2  . . . "

WHAT?!?!?

I'm not buying a CLOD HOPPER shoe . . .

I wear a Size 7 Shoe . . . SEVEN . . . S-E-V-E-N

I know all about the size shoe I wear, thank you very much.

I know ALL about walking, I've been doing that for over 56 years, thank you very much.

But did I really know?

No . . . No I did not!

For YEARS I have been buying THE WRONG shoe and THE WRONG SIZE for walking!

Shoes and Walking . . . How Pedestrian!

Image result for house shoe

Yesterday, I let someone who knows more than I on the subject of shoes and walking . . . educate me!

I bought a SIZE 8, running shoe!   It's a wonderful fit.

I never thought I would wear a size 8 running shoe for walking!   However, when I let an EXPERT on the subject explain the REASONS . . . IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE.

Buyers and Sellers need to listen to an expert when buying or selling.  Real estate is a lot more complicated than shoe buying . . . and for years I have to admit . . . I've been doing it ALL wrong, buying walking shoes that is!  When buying real estate and representing my clients, I'm a very knowledgable, experienced agent!  You don't need to walk a mile in my shoes . . . I'll handle it all!!

Please  feel free to write your own 'if the shoe fits' analogies in the comments!

Carla, I think this is a good lesson for all of us. Listen to the experts; they know and if we are openminded we might just get better served. I have always bought a half to full size larger for my walking shoes. For me it is about weight. I don't buy heavy shoes.

You prove your point perfectly, Carla Muss-Jacobs, Principal Broker/Owner ... and we may be the expert in our field, but someone else is the expert in another.  Not always easy to swallow ... we don't know everything and can still learn!

Alan Kirkpatrick -- it's a walking clinic and people get together to walk as a form of exercise, ie., to get into it on a regular basis and to get the best out of it.  I walk 3-5 miles about 5 days a week.  I am unable to run/jog due to a knee injury. When done correctly -- the correct walking shoes, pacing, cooling off, stride, wrist and/or ankle weights -- it can be a very good exercise.

Ya just never know what lessons you can learn about "real estate" from other completely unrelated sources. Stepping away from the past experience that one has to be open to a true expert's opinion can work wonders, but not everyone is open to it! If they were, our jobs would be so much easier!

Great comparison, Carla. There area experts in their own field and we need to listen to them no matter what we think we know. Interesting about buying shoes that are bigger to walk in. I was once rented ski boots that were a size and half too big and almost killed myself. :(

Carla- excellent!  Yes, go to the experts in their field.  Isn't that the same thing we tell FSBO's!  And on those shoes... I have no arch whatsoever, so we did go to one of those walking stores and they had me walk while they watched.  Yes they were high but we got them on sale, and for the first time, my back wasn't killing me from wearing the wrong walking shoes!!!

What a great post! I don't think I own a pair of running/walking shoes. However, I love how you tied it into real estate and made such a valid point! Listening to the pro's is always a better idea than thinking you know it all!

Jane Peters . . . feet swell when walking, not sure if they do when skiing.  But your comment reminded me of the time I tried to ice skate and didn't have the laces tied tight around my ankles, LOL.   So even with shoes, it does depend on what the activity will be.  And when dealing with our clients . . . the advice we give first-time buyer is a heck of a lot different than what we tell with our investor clients.

Kathy Streib . . . it makes a world of difference.  I don't need arch support, although I thought I did.  The shoe expert guy told me why and it made sense too!  Funny how I didn't really know much.

This is great. Nice job weaving it all together, LOL!  I've never really put much stock in sizes for shoes or clothing. There really is no consistency and until I try it on I have no idea if it fits or not. I've never been the type to just be able to buy according to size. Finding comfortable shoes is torture for me....shoe shopping is something I dread. I'm glad you found the right fit for you!  Enjoy them!
